Mania Box Office Report: Riddick Rules

Back in Black!

By Robert T. Trate     September 09, 2013
Source: Box Office Mojo

I think Mania made a pretty strong case to get out and see Riddick this weekend (check our review and The Geek Life). Personally, it was great to sit back and see if director David Twohy and Vin Diesel could entertain me. They did, and apparently a lot of other people too.

Ray Subers, of Box Office Mojo, did compare it to Vin Diesel’s other solo projects: “Opening at 3,107 theaters, Riddick's $18.7 million debut is right in line with modest expectations. Adjusting for ticket price inflation, Riddick had slightly higher initial attendance than Pitch Black, but was way below 2004'sThe Chronicles of Riddick (which cost around three times as much). Otherwise, star Vin Diesel doesn't have a ton of movies to compare to, though it is worth noting that this opening is well above 2008's Babylon A.D. ($9.5 million)”.

We are moving into the slow time of the year. There is still plenty of hype for second helpings of The Hobbit, Thor, and The Hunger Games. Since the genre fare is pretty light this week I suggest celebrating the unofficial holiday of Jason Voorhees. After all Friday is Friday the 13th!

Saw Riddick.  Had no problem with the first to acts, but the third act was weak.  Two other problems 1) The necromanger wrapup was murky at best.  2) The scale was even a bit smaller than Pitch Black, which  I was okay with because of the need to keep the budget small.  Still a Riddick fan though.

Got too busy and didn't make it to Diesal-fest. Will try to see it next weekend.

FYI, the collection of all Friday the 13th movies comes out on Bluray this Friday...how poetic.

Because the One Direction movie has doubled it's money, does this mean we have to endure a sequel?

karas1 9/9/2013 3:09:00 PM

You don't have to endure anything if you don't go see it.

I saw Riddick and liked it.  He had a cute puppy!  I want one of those space wolves.

Saw Riddick on Sunday.  There was a definite cheese factor, but it didn't take itself too seriously, so it worked.  We were entertained, so mission accomplished.

I saw The World's End.  It was a C .  And, this coming from a huge fan of the guys.  A shame because I know they can do so much better.  A film should not rely on previous films for its jokes.  That is just lazy.  I don't think I had one good LOL moment.  Not even after they used "WTF" for the 20th time.  I hope this is truly not the end for Pegg, Wright and Frost.

I've never seen a Diesel film at the theaters.  He always comes off as a bit of a douche to me.  Pitch Black was good, but the F&TF films hold zero appeal to me.

C plus.  What is up with their talk back and not recognizing symbols?

Dazzler 9/10/2013 4:32:23 AM

Riddick is the best real sci fi movie of the year for me so far.  Yes even over Pafic Rim.  Riddick seemed to have a good plan for realistic box office.  If they can keep in in this range we should should see more.
