Spiderman is still a very pleasant surprise for me and I look forward to owning it on Blu-Ray and can't wait for the sequel. With that said, I'm excited for the Dark Knight Rises but am going in with just middle of the road expectations. As long as I'm entertained and don't feel the three hours in length it will be a success in my books. Even the first half of Avengers caught me glancing at my watch, they made up for it on the back half of the movie so I'm hoping Batman will keep this summer rolling toward one of the best movie summers in a long time.

Not surprised with the Spidey totals, this same movie if it was filmed as spidey 4 with a new cast would have made more money, it's not a bad film people just don't want to start over again. For goodness sakes if we keep the mask on for more of the movie it would not mater that we have new actors, and the loss of Mary Jane could have been written off as a fight.

Et could we just not write her off as the victim of bad driving in NYC, maybe a cab or garbage truck? Yeah her acting was that bad.

Agreed they should have just changed actors and stuck with the story already built. No need to incorporate the Ultimate version into this and that is where they are going with it. Man I wish Sony would bankrupt so the rights could fall back to Marvel. Perhaps since it will not make back what it costs the investors will not pony up for the second movie? We could only hope.

Oh and the movie was not horrible, just not as good as it could have been.

Lazarus, Spidey has made $500 million so far, it made back its money.  Sony is expecting it to top out at $800 million.  They will pony up for a sequel.

Yeah, and the sequel will make more money than this one, and so it goes...

I'm going to ask again, how do they goet those figures for who watches a movie?  When buying a movie ticket I've never seen anybody taking note of my sex or age.  Do they survey certain theateres and extrapolate this data?  Or is the ticket seller at my local cineplex recording this info behind my back?

Inquiring minds want to know.

@karas1 – There are several ways marketers can get those numbers. People can opt into a survey, they can set up focus groups at certain theaters, etc... Then after they have determined a feasible amount of numbers (the marketing department can set this to be anything they want) they will produce a metric study on their findings. Is it accurate? To their numbers it is and that's all they need to be held accountable for. If they can provide a study with accurate numbers pulled from it, then they are good to go. Does their studies accurately depict who and what age are actually going to that film throughout the world? More than likely, no. Hence why you never buy too much stock into any numbers provided for consumers since the studies can be made to look whatever way they want. For Ice Age, it appears they want to hit young moms and their kids so hence the numbers favor more women and audiences in their 20s.

@ karas1...I've been to theater chains in big market cities (LA, NY and Chicago) on opening weekends over the years and was given a questionnaire after the movie. I've never seen it in small town theaters or in independent theaters.

The new Spiderman is my favorite of the four films and I look forward to the next movie. I'd like to see another old-school villain as we're introduced to Norman Osborn. Have Norman pulling the villain's string and then in the third movie get the Green Goblin.

I'm still not excited for TDKR, but I know I'll be excited after the movie. I have complete faith in Nolan and company.
