Mania Box Office Report: Transformers, again

Are we the jaded ones? Clearly, Transformers: Age of Extinction is not made for the fun loving movie maniacs of Mania. I don’t feel as if I am missing out by not seeing Michael Bay’s latest movie. I also don’t feel as if I can critique the film, since I never saw it. Over the holiday weekend I got an ear full from our Shock-O-Rama columnist, Chuck Francisco. Yikes. Who know the Romeo and Juliet law was a thing in Texas? Certainly not I.

Ray Subers, of Box Office Mojo had the proper numbers on T4’s second weekend. “Transformers: Age of Extinction plummeted 64 percent to an estimated $36.4 million. Without any serious competition, Transformers became the first movie since Captain America: The Winter Soldier to repeat in first place.

So far, Age of Extinction has earned $174.7 million, and is trailing the last two Transformers movies by a wide margin. Based on its current trajectory, it's likely that this winds up between $245 million and $265 million”.

This means more Michael Bay and more Transformers, for certain. I’m happy Petter Cullen gets the work, but how much of a percentage does he get? It better be a lot.

I went out and saw Chef (currently #14 on the charts) this weekend. I highly recommend it. Why? Well I like Jon Favreau (director of Iron Man and Iron Man 2) enough as an actor and as a director to see his latest opus. It was a damn good film. Can you blame me? Would you rather see Transformers on the big screen or Scarlett Johansson or Sofia Vergara. In all seriousness, Chef is a well crafted film that is both a journey of discovery as well as a tale about a father and a son. A great break in the robot insanity if ever there was one.

I’ve got a few weeks before Snowpiercer (jumped to #26 on the charts) arrives at my local art house theatre. What did you see this holiday weekend?

I had such a hectic week, I needed to unwind so I went and saw Transformers.  It was either that, or go with my frineds to see Tammy, and that sure as heck wasn't going to happen.  TF4 was about as I expected, it was bad, but the good kind of bad (and wow, was it long).

It was what it was, but I had no regrets (in the least) that I skipped out on Melissa McCarthy's latest (I'll be polite and just say...) film.  I'm sure a lot of you liked it, but thos kind of comedies just aren't my type of movie.

I will leave you with this... just 17 more days until San Diego, whoo hoo! :)

So is Transformers 4 really that bad? I just introduced all of the movies to my kids and they love them but keep hearing this one is soooo terrible. Not sure if I want to spend $40-50 for family of four outing if it totally sucks.

I'd say if you really liked the first 3 Transformers, then you will like the latest installment.  I've had issues with all of them, but this movie really isn't too bad when compared to the others.  I liked this one better than the 2nd movie.

It's Michael Bay Transformers.  You pretty much know what you are going to get going into it.  :)

Transformers 4 was a much better film than Transformers 2 and 3.  I had more to say about it but I got the dredded Forbidden error.

I felt T4 was about like Revenge of the Fallen in terms of a nonsensical plot and it taking place in many different locations...just with much less lame Bay humor.  If you enjoyed the first three, you will have a good time with this one.  I did.

irockdiesel 7/7/2014 9:57:57 AM

It was better than Transformer 2.  My issue with it is they just kept dragging out the plot... on and on and on... just when you thought it was over... more stuff thrown in.

Eldogg42 7/7/2014 10:07:53 AM

You say they were dragging out the plot??  I sat through 3 hours of that movie, and still don't know what the plot was.

lazarus 7/7/2014 3:38:39 PM

There was a plot? I  have seen better plot writing in porn films.

What the hell is wrong with Elbaz!!!! You subjected your kids to those movies!?!?!??! For shame.......

Rob is a hater. He's seen the movie about four times already and he really like it. The REAL problem is that he's come off so hard on Michael Bay in the past that now that he honestly likes TF4, he's afraid of the ridicule he's going to have to eat if he comes out and applauds Bay. Basically, Rob is loser who cannot admit that Bay has done something he could never do. SMH!!
