Mania Box Office Report: Transformers, Of Course

Michael Bay Lives On

We are sad to report that Michael Bay will continue to do what he does best. Make mindless, non-sensical movies, with enormous explosions. Transformers: Age of Extinction took the box office last weekend and thus ensured that there will be yet another Transformers movie.

We hope, and we really do hope, that many of you got out to see Snowpiercer (see our review) instead.

Ray Subers had to this say on Transformers: Age of Extinction: “Domestically, Age of Extinction's opening ranks second all-time among Transformers movies behind 2009'sRevenge of the Fallen ($108 million). That's not an apples-to-apples comparison, though: all three previous movies burned off demand by launching mid-week.

At 353 IMAX locations, Transformers earned an estimated $10.7 million (second all-time in June behind last year's Man of Steel). A 3D share is not available”.

Snowpiercer came in at #26 with $171,187 on only 8 screens!

This holiday weekend, we have two must see movies. The first being Earth to Echo. Can it capture that E.T. magic? Deliver Us from Evil also looks interesting. If it rains this weekend, expect both of these movies to be packed!

Did Mania review Edge of Tommrow ? Has anyone see it ?

I saw it and even though I thought it looked pretty good in the trailers it was even better than expected.

Badass transformers FTW!!

It was so obvious that Bay did this movie for a paycheck and totally phoned it in.  I have no issue suspending reality when i watch a movie about robots turning into cars, but this movie had more WTF moments than the previous 3 combined.

Edge of Tomorrow was a great film.  Go see it.

I liked Transformers 4 much better than Transformers 2 and 3.  Mark Whalberg was a much more sympathetic protagonist than Shia LeBeuf.  I'm not a Shia hater.  But Sam Witwicky whined his way through 3 movies and I got a little tired of it.

As for the giant robots.  Prime got a good role.  We knew Bumblebee from the previous films.  The other transformers didn't have very good roles.  They were very broad stereotypes in an attempt to give them personalities.  It didn't work.

Also agree that Edge of Tomorrow is great hard sci-fi tale. Closest thing I can say for comparison is Groundhog Day Starship Troopers but its better than that.

Still haven't seen T4. I'm not in a hurry. I've got no hate - or love - for Bay's work. It is what it is. I'll be seeing it for the great FX and action sequences on a big screen. These movies have been the number one moneymaker for every year they are out and I'm pretty sure it'll be the same in 2014.

I can't believe some people actually thought Age of Extinction was the worst of the series. Look I saw it and it's still a D in my book not an F like the others. The reason it gets a D, whether he phoned it in or not he took out all the military shit and while the movie was still bloated with ridiculous excess I felt like I could follow the movie a little better because of that. Dark of the Moon had so much ridiculous s%$F# going on at the end you honestly couldn't follow any story let alone the action. I also thought the design of the autobots were better in this film. Crosshairs and Drift were pretty damn cool. Crosshairs alone had one of the coolest autobot design's with the metal trenchcoat.

I've never understood why people think Bay is a good action director. Good action scenes are well choreographed too look chaotic you can still tell whats going on and the action usually has a point in the context of the story, Bay's flicks are just explosions and debri being thrown at the camera. I don't even think the actors know what's going on half the time. Maybe Bay's boredome with the series is exactly what it needed. Thought it was funny though that his reason for coming back for part 4 was because he didn't want another director to make a Transformers movie of lesser quality than he would. WTF!!!!!!!!! Look it up.

I think what he meant was, he didnt want other directors to show how it SHOULD look like.

Edge of Tomorrow was surprisingly good

Edge of Tomorrow was very good.  I wasn't that surprised.
