Mania Box Office Report: Up Up and Away!

Man of Steel Soars, Sets New Record

By Robert T. Trate     June 17, 2013
Source: Box Office Mojo

Did it launch a new franchise? Yes. Despite what my opinion, Rob Vaux’s or yours, the Man of Steel is here to stay. According to Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo “Through Sunday, Man of Steel earned a fantastic estimated $125.1 million—$113.1 million during the traditional Friday-to-Sunday period, and another $12 million from Thursday night group sales. That's the second-best opening of 2013 so far behind Iron Man 3, and it's a new record for highest opening ever in June ahead of Toy Story 3 ($110.3 million)”.

This means sequel Maniacs (definitively, even though it was already announced). I was pleased with the film overall. If there was anything I disliked about the film, it was the fact that the fight sequences dragged on. Then again how do you fight unstoppable beings?

Another thought, that kicked in half way through, was I didn't feel as if I was watching a Zach Snyder movie. Well until the hand to hand combat started anyway. The film felt grounded. Sure the majority of Krypton was CGI, but there was just too much to take in to not appreciate it.

What’s next Maniacs? The Lone Ranger? World War Z? Elysium? Oh and as I was reminded by my fellow Maniacs, there is still The Wolverine and Pacific Rim

You forget Wolverine Bob. It ranks at the bottom of the 4 superhero films but I think it'll be a huge improvement over the first with Mangold directing

I thought MOS would do around 130 so even though I felt it would set a June record it still felt low. Now let's hope it has the legs for a 300mill run or close. It's doing great overseas too.

You all will get tired of me saying this but bring on AQUAMAN. Most folk seem to think it'll be Flash and Wonder Woman. But Superman has Flash's power even if it's to a lesser degree so I say save him for later personally. You also add a new Batman the premier detective in the world and that also covers a bit of Barry Allen, he seems a bit redundant

 Dont forget Pacific Rim.

 Damn you're right!

Oh yeah saw This is the End. Really enjoyed it, very funny. I always felt that the way it was done in American Dad could really work on film and I'd say this is somewhat close to what I thought it would be like.

I also think we need a clearer definition of stoner film, this didn't feel like that to me. To me it's gotta revolve around drug/alcohol use. Either they're stoned/drunk or trying to get stoned/drunk for most of the film for me to consider it a stoner film. Guess it's just one of those things that has a grey area

Definitely checking out WWZ next weekend and may give Supes a 4th go-round

I was also pleased and enjoyed it. I liked that it was more science fiction movie about powerful aliens coming to Earth than a superhero movie. That is a different take than has been done in any incarnation of the character.

It was not perfect and you can see by comments here and on many sites there are events in it that everybody argues over and I understand them. But these are the type of points there will never be an answer that satisfies everybody. Some fans are going to hate this movie and some aren't. But as I always say, the commenters online are only a small but vocal minorty of fanboys and may not be nowhere near the general public's attitude on the subject. That public really like it and that's what ultimately matters for DC/Warners. From here they build their DC-movieverse.

Haven't really commented on the film yet, but I liked MOS.  Could it have been a lot better? Yes. But it could have much more easily been worse.  I was annoyed with the slightly-shaky camera in what seemed like every scene.  I'd be more than happy to sit through 1,000 lens flares if it meant a steady camera shot.

I'm with Wiseguy on AQUAMAN.  The visuals for Aquaman could be absolutely incredible, not to mention that he has always been a very under-rated hero (damn you, Super Friends)!  I actually think that a successful Avatar 2 will help with an Aquaman movie, if the rumors of the underwater scenes are true.  Hell, bring on James Cameron as a director (that would actually be quite awesome, the more I think about it).

I'm not an Avatar fan, but I can appreciate it for what it was and can do, and hope the sequels do well (despite my likely absence).

U also missing RIPD, Kickass 2 and World'sEnd.

MOS will do $300 and $900 worldwide.  If it those #s, WB can take its time with Justice League and probably do Supes/bats team up first to bring the cash.  That would beat every other studio to a "team up" movie.  Although  black Widow is  in Capt 2, i aint counting her.  Also Aquaman like Wise mentioned and Wonder Woman flicks would be different from Any other super hero stuff.

CaptAmerica04 6/17/2013 9:02:53 AM

Well, considering a lot of the bad press that MOS is getting, the real test will be how fast and how far it drops off the Top 10 in the ensuing weeks.  There's not a lot of real competition for it in the vein of comic films until Kick Ass 2 or Wolverine come out, so I'll be interested to see if it stays on top or keeps putting up big dollars.

hanso 6/17/2013 9:04:35 AM

Btw, also would like to share that God has blessed Mrs.Hanso and I with a beautiful baby boy.  He has a small pipi, just like his dad.

Wiseguy 6/17/2013 9:06:14 AM

LOL hanso, is that right? I thought you were joking before.....about the baby not the pipi. LOL

If so congrats brother.
