Mania Casts Doctor Strange

Our readers post their choices!

By Robert T. Trate     May 06, 2013

Mania interviewed uber producer Kevin Feige back in 2008 during the Incredible Hulk press junket. We were bold enough to bring up a Doctor Strange movie, even back then. Feige was quick to tell us that “I think Stephen Strange shares a quirkiness, a uniqueness with Tony Stark so I can think of a handful of people to play Stephen Strange. What I love to do is ask you guys who you want to play role. We patrol the message boards all the time to see who the fans want in this particular role. I’ll tell you this, our movies have two casting lists. One that comes from the casting director and our own ideas, but the other is from the message boards about what people are buzzing about”. The subject has resurfaced again with Feige doing the Iron Man 3 press junket. Last weekend he told us that it would be after Ant-Man and Avengers 2

With that topic in mind, we asked for your top choices for Doctor Strange. Some of the choices were the standard run of the mill actors. Others really got us thinking so we added our two cents as well. In the hopes that Marvel and Kevin Feige read our message boards, we have reposted your choices below. Before you start discussing that so and so has already played a Marvel character in the past, remember Chris Evans was once the Human Torch. He now resides as Marvel’s Captain America.

Jim Caviezel - Chosen by Violator13

Seems the obvious choice only because he had a beard in The Count of Monte Cristo.
Jon Hamm - Chosen by Wiseguy
Too old for Superman, too old for Doctor Strange and has he done anything worthwhile outside of “Mad Men?”
Johnny Depp - Chosen by Violator13

He’s a chameleon and can play anything. Money doesn’t matter and it’s all about the role. This is a good choice.
Benedict Cumberbatch - Chosen by lusiphur
A talented actor who is also a hot commodity at the moment.
Zachary Quinto - Chosen by lusiphur
Mr. Spock as Strange? He’s already played the villain and the hero. Could he be the Master of Mysticism?
David Tennant - Chosen by Wyldstaar
As good a choice as Cumberbatch, but has no recognition outside of the “Whovians.”
Karl Urban - Chosen by SaracasticCaveman
After playing Doctor McCoy and Judge Dredd, Doctor Strange seems like the right choice.
Viggo Mortensen - Chosen by noahbody
He may be too old, but there’s nothing Viggo can’t do. A good choice, but it’s not going to happen.
Joseph Fiennes - Chosen by dnbrit
Fiennes is an interesting choice and would definitely bring the art house crowd to Doctor Strange.
James Franco - Chosen by Shogunn2517
Has he ever really played a grownup? If Franco can get past Franco, he might just rejoin the Marvel universe.
Orlando Bloom - Chosen by torvar72
Already the master of two trilogies. Then again, have you ever liked Orlando Bloom in anything outside of a trilogy?
Patrick Dempsey - Chosen by torvar72
May be the perfect choice... and we know he can play a doctor.
Andrew Lincoln - Chosen by Munkey421e
He has really surprised us as an actor. However The Walking Dead may keep him away from movie stardom.

You forgot Liam Neeson! He'd be a perfect choice for a more matrue looking Dr. Strange and he has the perfect accent to play a Master of Mysticism.

I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of mystical skills; mystical skills I have acquired after a very long medical career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.

 Oh, you're so sarcastic.

 Just having some fun,

Everything from Joseph Fiennes on down the list are ridiculous suggestions.  James Franco?  That's made me chuckle.

Wiseguy 5/6/2013 4:35:43 AM

Why would an American doctor/magician need an accent?

MrJawbreakingEquilibrium 5/6/2013 4:40:04 AM

 What about Hugh Laurie?

Wiseguy 5/6/2013 4:40:04 AM

Jon Hamm is younger than Caviziel and Depp

jedibanner 5/6/2013 5:23:13 AM

Cumberbatch all the way, they need someone young and great actor, he's both.

Throwing in my 2c for Aidan Gillen.  Littlefinger has the white sidebruns and everything!
