You're the second industry professional I've heard say that this format just does not look that good.  Glad I can save some gas and ticket money to see it in regular 2D in my own town.

An interesting read. I saw the film in 48fps the second time and there was a definite period of acclimatisation to the new format. To start with it almost looked as if things were moving in high speed. Once I adjusted however it was amazing. The 3D became fully immersive for the first time in a film; it didn't stand out at all anymore it was just a natural part of the image. I didn't find that it made the sets and makeup look fake at all.

I for one love the "soap opera" look,  it makes you feel that the characters are in the same room.  Tech should  evolve not de-evolve.

Wiseguy 12/18/2012 4:32:26 AM

Speak for yourself dude,  we? I don't think so. I loved the format, the clarity, the sharpness. I want the fantasy and escapism but I want it to look and feel like it is real.

I don't expect the industry to change completely, all I want is what we got with the Hobbit, give us some screens using the new format for some films and let the dinosaurs stick with theirs.

I'm glad some of you are enjoying the clarity and sharpness of the new format, but I'm pretty sure I'll always be one of the curmudgeonish coots who says they can keep it.  Clarity and sharpness mean very little to me if I can see exactly how silly the make up and practical effects look.  This might work better in some genres, I don't know...the only mental image I keep getting is the BBC "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" in crystal clear 3D...no thank you.

I completely agree with you, Joel. You put to print exactly what I've been trying to explain to people. It's awful looking, and I feel like the sooner it goes away, the better.

Great article Joel, mostly also with your experience in the media it heps to have your opinion supported by your experience.

Unlike Wiseguy, us ''dinosaurs'' who like quality and don't care for kids gimmicks, film in 24fs is still the much prefered way to make movies for a lot of people and from the backlash this new 48fs is getting, I wouldn't expect many big movies like this to come out in the same style.

Obviously some will ike the new technology and to be fair, it's ok to present both format, just like the 3D crap, but as long as it doesn't become the norm and it's just pushed and pushed and pushed when so many don't like it, just like they are still trying to do with 3D.

Sounds like the Mania reviewers wanna hate this movie for some reason.  What's wrong guys?  I am thinking that Rob and this guy didn't get their requested "Males of Hobbiton" calender they requested from PJ.

SarcasticCaveman 12/18/2012 6:28:49 AM

Rob gives a movie a solid B, and you feel the need to pull the gay jokes out of your closet?

Wiseguy 12/18/2012 6:36:01 AM

I guess I like kid gimmicks as much as PJ, I'll take that company
