Shirley Manson joins the cast of Terminator SCC

This Sunday on Fox Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles will return to television. Surviving both the writers strike and a network notorious for canceling genre and fan favorite shows Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles will see their cast grow. Already 90210 alumni Brian Austin Green will return as Derek Reese, John’s (Thomas Dekker) uncle and solider of the future’s brother Kyle Reese (made famous by Michael Biehn). The newest cast member comes from the most unlikeliest of places, the rock band Garbage. Shirley Manson, the lead singer for Garbage, will make her acting debut on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Mania: What brought you from singing in a band to acting?
Shirley Manson: I wasn’t looking to officially get into acting. It’s something that I always wanted to do. I never found really found anything I was interested in. Then Josh Friedman, the writer and creator of this show, called me up and asked if I would be interested in auditioning for the show. I said yeah, but I really didn’t think it through. It was more of a trigger response, because I was a big Terminator fan. He then said you need to come in for an audition tomorrow. I did the audition process and got the part before I really understood the full implications of what I had gotten myself into. I feel very fortunate because it is definitely something I wanted to do with my life. It came at a really great time in my life when I felt I need to shake things up.
Mania: What details can you tell us about your character?
Shirley Manson: Her name is Catherine Weaver. She is the CEO of a corporation that develops certain technologies. She is very self empowered, successful, self-assured, singular and a very cool character to play.
Mania: Were you involved with the development of the character?
Mania: Will Catherine Weaver go head to head with Sarah Connor?
Shirley Manson: Not that I know of. They send you scripts in little installments. I have no idea where they are doing with the character. Which is sort of exciting, I think.
Mania: What is the coolest scene you have shot so far?
Shirley Manson: I am so overwhelmed; I’ve never professionally acted before. So it’s all cool to me. I feel like I am in a sandbox when I am six, playing. So they all seem cool to me. Some of the scenes are with an ensemble. Many of them are with Richard (Richard T. Jones who plays FBI agent James Ellison), in fact, who I have a lot of scenes with. I think he is such a great actor I sit there and think that this guy is good that I remember I have to act too.
Mania: Will you lose your accent for the part?
Mania: Will you pursue only acting now?
Shirley Manson: I would certainly like to do more acting. I love the experience of it. It’s exciting and new for me. I feel like I will hopefully always make music. It’s just been my whole life since I was fifteen. I think I will always carry that through whether I do that in a public forum or not. I don’t want to close any doors. I just want to see what happens.
Mania: Will any of your music be featured on the show? It certainly would fit.
Shirley Manson: No. I think it would fit too, but I haven’t been approached for anything like that yet.
Mania: You mentioned you were a fan of the Terminator films. What is about the films that you identify with?
Shirley Manson: I loved Arnie (Schwarzenegger) and the kitschness of his kick-ass persona. I loved Linda Hamilton. I thought [she] played an amazing, interesting, kind of empowered female. Terminator 2 was my movie. I just felt [Hamilton’s character] was so intense and powerful. I just responded to that ‘cause I was young and disenfranchised. I wanted to be her. I wanted to be empowered. I wanted to kick ass and push back the people I felt weren’t treating me right. I think I identified with her more than anything.
Shirley Manson will make her acting debut on the first episode of the second season of Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles on Sunday September 7, 2008. With a mini season out of the way and the writers strike behind them, the cast and crew of Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles will be under the microscope to see if they can make it work for an entire season. With an already growing cast and an intricate plot line that has rewritten the history of the Terminator franchise, season 2 looks to be one of the most promising shows on television.
