It is the case with any big summer blockbuster that there must be tie-ins. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will probably have the Burger King or McDonald’s happy meals or collector cups. Undoubtedly there will t-shirts at Wal-Mart in both kid and dork sizes. My favorite tie-in is the video game. Now, I know what you thinking, “Movie games always suck”. Most of the time the game is either too driven towards a younger audience or is way too short. At the International Toy Fair Activision was on hand in conjunction with Hasbro and debuted their new Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen game. The game will have the movie to play out but more importantly it will have an online battle mode that looks out of this world. Activision’s producer for the game, Jason Ades, was on hand at Toy Fair to answer a few questions.

Mania: For the online play will I have to be a certain character or will I get to choose?

Jason Ades: People identify with Autobots and Decepticons. You’ll get to jump right in and choose your faction. You’ll enter either the Autobot war room or the Decepticon war room and choose from any of the unlockable missions available to you. Plus you’ll get to choose from a wide variety of Transformer characters. You’ll then immediately jump into frenetic fast paced action where every action, every choice and every decision is the difference between the Earth’s annihilation or protection.

Mania: Will the Transformation be an improvement from the last game?

Jason Ades: We looked very closely at the transformation system. We did a complete overhaul on this. We moved to a very fast paced, again fluid, instantaneous, seamless transformation that allows players to use their transformation in a purpose driven manner.

Mania: Okay, so how does Bumble Bee chase after Starscream?

Jason Ades: You can transform into your Camaro and you can race at top speed toward a building, immediately change into robot mode and grab onto the side of the building, climb up to the top of the building, very quickly, instantaneously transform back into your vehicle mode, race across at full speed, leap off transforming into robot mode then back into vehicle mode so you can hit the ground running.

Mania: What can you share with us about the online experience?

Jason Ades: You will be able to go online and duke it out globally in full featured multiplayer for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. We will have modes such as team death match, capture the flag as well as a domination style game where basically we will have a neutral style headquarters. You’ll have to take it over and stave off the enemies for any given time amount of time. That is just a couple of the online modes we have planned.

Mania: Will I be able to transform in the online battle mode?

Jason Ades: Everything we are designing for the single player campaign you will be able to take online which includes your advanced transformations, of course your up close melee and all ranges of combat. All modes of play are part of the online experience.

Mania: How many people will be able to participate in the online mode?

Jason Ades: There (laughs) is so much I want to be able to tell you right now. We have a lot of multiplayer stuff to announce.

Mania: Who is developing the game?

Jason Ades: We have extremely passionate developers. For the Xbox 360 and the PS3 we have Luxoflux. They have come in and worked on games such as Vigilante 8, True Crime: Streets of LA and they are the award winning team that did Kung Fu Panda. Their experience with vehicle physics, vehicle combat, with melee system they developed for Kung Fu Panda, with Activision long lineage of making great first person shooter games that together is the combination is what is going to make this game great and an excellent experience. A lot of you will remember a Transformers game for the Armada series created by the Melbourne House which is now Krome Studios. They’re back to do the Wii and PS2Beenox is doing the PC version and Vicarious Visions is doing the NDS. You have both companies doing the PC.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen the movie will hit theaters on 24th June 2009. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen the game will be released on all platforms the 16th of June.

Do we get to shoot Jon Turturrow's character.  I'd love to be able see his character from the first movie die and die again.

Im skeptical about this game but im still excited. The 1st one had good ideas but just not completely followed through....something like that. The multiplayer sound sweeeeeet-ish. I want to see gameplay and how rushed the game ends up being. The incredible hulk movie game, again promising ideas just not polished/finished

I'll look into this one.
