Are you Xbox Experienced? Check out the new features from Microsoft!

The New Xbox Experience is here and it’s a good one.
As many of you may know by now the old “blade” system is gone. An Ipod-like inventory/library/product system replaces the good ‘ol blades.
There will probably be some whining about the blades not being broken and while I agree that the Blades system worked well, I can’t help but be impressed and a little awed at the new experience. Even if it may not be all that more efficient then the last system, it certainly is sexier.
More 411
There’s a lot more information available when looking at products such as games. In game screen-shots, for example, are very welcome additions as well as a screen where you can view all game info text as opposed to the old automatically scrolling text box which I found really annoying.
Netflix through your 360
The biggest and most exciting addition has to be, without a doubt, Netflix integration.
The experience was flawless and set-up is incredibly easy. You have to have a Netflix account AND an Xbox Live Gold account but Ladies and Gentlemen, this IS the future of renting and watching movies. At this point only Netflix’s “Instant” movies are available but that library is continuously expanding and already features a substantial availability of films to watch. If you are already a member of Netflix, any movie that’s in your “queue” that is also an “Instant” movie is immediately available through your Xbox 360. An “Instant” movie you add to your queue online appears in your Xbox Live library in seconds. I was amazed. It’s not perfect though, it would be nice to be able to arrange movies alphabetically. If you have a large queue it can be a tedious exercise to cycle through all your movies to find the one you want (I have over 150 films in my queue so far). I think an option to arrange your Instant queue alphabetically or by genre will become a necessary option in the future. Also, movies aren’t in high-def. Yet. There’s word that Netflix will be adding High-def in the not too distant future.
This, very importantly, is why, in the past, Microsoft has not committed to a high-def disc format for the Xbox. It doesn’t believe in discs. Rightly so, Microsoft sees the future of movies as being on-demand and this is their first major step in that direction. I couldn’t be more thrilled and was as giddy as a drunk 18 year old on prom-night when I Netflix on my 360 for the very first time. You will be too.
It’s Party Time!
Also available is the ability to create “parties” of up to eight people. Check this out: you and seven of your friends will be able to watch a movie together, play games together and move through Xbox Live together.
Avatars and Mii
The other big Hoo-Ha for the new Xbox Experience are avatars. A more sophisticated version of Nintendo’s Miis, Xbox’s avatars are nothing short of delightful. Creating my first avatar induced a child-like sense of “wow”. Microsoft developer Rare Software has done a stellar job of injecting personality and charm into these adorable online representations. A friend of mine who absolutely has no interest in video games whatsoever was completely enamored when we created an avatar for her. “I can see we people spend all their time in these things” was her response.
Final Nail in the PS3’s Coffin?
By creating a more modern Ipod like navigation system and introducing Netflix capability and super-cute avatars, Microsoft is looking to reach out to the more casual gamer. The new Xbox Experience coupled with a $199.00 price point will do exactly that. The world economy is severely recessed and with people looking for a way to enjoy themselves, this could prove to be the fatal salvo in the war between Microsoft and Sony for your gaming dollar.
I can't wait to get home and download the new update for Xbox. Thought about getting in late to work today so I could do it early in the morning.
Anyway, this is not the final nail in Sony's coffin because the $199 price for the Xbox Arcade Model isn't a good deal. It's got no hard drive, the only thing they give you is a 512mb memory stick so you can save your games. In fact, Xbox had to give some extra memory sticks away if I'm not mistaken so anyone that bought the Arcade Model could be able to update to the New Xbox Experience. Stay away from the Arcade Model!! Unless you are gonna get a seperate hard drive for it.
I got the 60G Model and that's a good deal. Especially now with that bundle that has KungFu Panda/ Lego Indy Jones included. Sure not the best games, but you can always trade those is and get one you actually want. I recommend Fallout 3 & Gears of War 2.
Netflix thing sounds cool, I gotta get me the Xbox Live Gold membership so it can work. Not sure when I'll get that though. What's really cool of this new Xbox experience thing, which I don't think was mentioned (didn't read the whole article) is the fact that you can download your game to the Xbox hard drive (another reason you should staty away from the Arcade Model). Basically what this will do is that your Xbox will be less nosier cause it won't be reading from the disc, and it should help with the system staying cooler. The Xbox is much noisier than the PS3, one of the things I hate about Xbox, so hopefully this will lead to a better game experience, for me anyways. The Xbox avatars are a lame attempt at the Nintendo crowd. Unlike Nintendo, you won't be able to use your avatars in the games. I don't see the point to them, I'll probably build one just to have it :) Oh, and the Party Time feature is super lame.
