MANIA INTERVIEW- Geek Gods - On the Light Gray Carpet at the 2008 Spike TV Video Game Awards
Mania's Josh Gordon was on hand to pass along the highlights.
December 15, 2008
Geeks were given a hero’s welcome at the Spike TV 2008 Video Game Awards. Press crews two and three deep were crammed in like sardines while some of gaming’s brightest luminaries walked down the light gray carpet. EA president Peter Moore, Sim City and Spore creator Will Wright (also an award winner) and Little Big Planet’s Alex Evans were among those on hand at the um, illustrious event. Here’s how it went down.
Judas Priest and Guitar Hero
First of all, Rob Halford of Judas Priest and leather heavy metal clothing fame came quickly down the isle and we got to ask him what he thinks of games like Guitar Hero. He stated that he and the other guys in “The Priest” were pretty amazed by it all. Coming from the early days of gaming, Halford mentioned that he and the guys grew up with games like Pong. “To see how (videogames) have become such a major force in the entertainment world, it’s just wonderful for a band like Priest”
Insomniac’s Ted Price
When pressed for what Insomniac Games, makers of Resistance 2 and Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, had in store for the future, Insomniac’s Ted Price said that they are indeed hard at work for something in 2009 and have several games in pre-production but absolutely wouldn’t tell what games they were BUT did say that if we played Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty we might get a hint at what’s in store from Insomniac in 2009! Sounds like a big hint to us! When asked what his favorite 2008 games were Mr. Price quickly gave us Little Big Planet as his number one choice followed by Gears of War 2.
Little Big Planet’s Alex Evans
Alex Evans co-creator of Little Big Planet was up next and remarked how remarkable all of this (light gray carpet / video game awards frenzy) was to him. Big news from Alex is that there is much more LBP on the way. “What I want is to keep shocking you, Whether it’s sequel or a pack or DLC where we keep shocking you and have you think “oh my god, I thought LBP was a platform game, and it’s not just a platform game”. He went on to say that they just finished up the Metal Gear pack for LBP and that it’s much more than just costumes, “It’s actually game changing” he said. I had to ask him what the chances are for Little Big Planet to make its way to the Xbox 360. His response was “Never say never but right now it’s a PS3 exclusive.”
EA’s Peter Moore
Peter Moore, EA’s big cheese stated that they couldn’t be happier with the way things are going. Fight Night was the big news EA was bringing to the awards show (Mohammad Ali Vs Mike Tyson. – don’t laugh, it actually looks really cool, believe it or not)
Game God Will Wright
We were pretty excited when Will Wright, gaming guru behind Sim City and Spore spoke with us. When prompted about what he thought had the biggest impact on games in 2008, his answer was “the Internet”, citing games becoming more social than ever. I asked him what he was excited about in gaming’s future. “I’m still really excited about players generating gameplay, so what I’m doing in the future is still centered around that” he went on to talk a little bit about something that sounds really interesting, “Also, games getting more involved in the real world, LESS immersive so your not sitting in front of a dark screen late at night, you’re out in the world playing games.”
What’s up next for Tony Hawk
Next up was world’s most famous skateboarder Tony Hawk. What games is the master boarder playing? Guitar Hero and Lego Batman with his kids. The new Tony Hawk game will be coming out in 2009 and he’s really stoked about it. He wouldn’t say too much about it but he did get a huge smile on his face and revealed that it will provide “a true skating experience”. I went on to ask him what is going to separate the new Tony Hawk game from the Tony Hawk games of the past. Without missing a beat he said “the controls. I can’t say more than that but people are going to freak.”
