Will definitely try to check this out then!

Hey Wise, if my kids like Thor and Cap, will they like this?

My youngest saw the trailer and said she wanted to see it. We need to do something during March break next week. :)

Ok, I'm sold. I'll go see it in a week or 2 if I can find the time.

Glad you liked it Rob, but I have to agree with karas on this one.  The general audience does not look for historical importance.  To be honest I would be surprised if the general public even knows who John Carter is and who wrote him.  Most of us here on this site are familiar with a wide range of science fiction, fantasy, comic books or what have you, it's why we come here.  However, most of the general public is going to see it (if they go at all) because they want an action adventure movie that will keep them entertained for a couple of hours and could care less about the influence the character had on Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers or sci-fi writing and movie making in general.  Maybe I am not giving the masses enough credit, or perhaps you are giving them a bit too much.

Appearently Disney's head of marketing got canned during the fall of last year that left a void in leadership and the promotion for John Carter took a hit because of it. (There are articles online about this) I'm not saying this as an excuse but it completely makes sense. The movie is good but people haven't been sold on it. That is a marketing issue and its unfortunate.

Wise - good to know you liked it. Planning on going to see it with the family this evening.
No midnight showing in my area. I live close to San Luis Obispo and one of the "film festivels" started Wednesday, so all the local theatres that would have had the midnight showing were filled with independants instead.
Oh the irony.
But I will be there today!

Rob, got to say I am shocked that you were this level-headed in your assessment.
I honestly expected a thorough thrashing of it based on comparisons to other sci-fi/fantasty flicks of late.
Your approach of taking it on its own merit is appreciated.
Still, in movies like this you and I are usually about a grade different. So if you gave it a B then it has got to be a solid A to A on my scale.

Karas - I saw either a poster or a teaser somewhere that stated something like "Before Star Wars, before Avatar, there was..... John Carter". I believe Rob is saying they should have expanded slightly on that premise.
"From the creator of Tarzan." "Based on one of the first science fiction stories written over 100 years ago"
But the campaign should run concurrent with the one now. Give people a view from both angles.
Honestly, it will be tough to generate interest in this either way.
Too many people are turned off by the Disney brand, viewing it immediately as a "kiddie" film when that logo appears. I had several buddies that wouldn't see Tron for that reason alone.
Then Spring Break will pull alot of the teenage and young adult crowd away from the theatre and out to the beaches.
And with the PG-13 rating, you may get some parents hesitating to take their 10 yr olds to see it.
We'll see.

I will, of course be seeing it this weekend and can then give my opinion. As much as I want this to be a hit, like everyone else here I see that as a hard slog. It has a huge budget and the already mentioned poor marketing. Well, we'll see what we'll see come Monday B.O. returns.

I know nothing of the source material nor do I care to find out about it.  However, I will make every attempt to catch the flick this weekend and add my $ in support of this thing not bombing.

For those of you that thought I was nuts with the reviews I had heard...mixed to negative.  Yup, I can confirm this.  Even RT was at 51 percent.  Going to be a like it or hate it movie.

Wife and I watched that first 10 mins clip and she couldn't stop laughing at how stupid it was.  Me thinks the Prince of Persia comparisons are spot on for this movie.  I'll wait for redbox.

ElBaz, hate to be put in the spot but I'd think that if the kids liked the Thor fantasy aspect they'd probably like this

Hobbs, when you made the comment facts didn't support it and it really came off as your opinion especially since you haven't changed your tune. Not that you're not entitled to it. Now the skeptics are all around and about so the "mixed" part of your comment came true. Like you, I tend to think, it's a lot of folk that already made up their mind beforehand, but that's just me speculating

I think the only hope of possible sequels will be decided by the overseas market. Too bad but even if there are no sequels this will be a gem in my library the minute it comes out for the home market

Dejah Thoris will be the next popular character for hot female cosplay. She looked amazing in both the wedding gown and her "warrior" attire
