Wise - Not related to Carter but I saw your Smacketology comment in the TV Wasteland thread.  Just wanted to say my final four got screwed up as well as some of the elite 8 ( didn't see Marlo get upset by Bodie).  For the Final Four, I had Omar, McNulty, Carcetti and Stringer Bell but Carcetti is out so that's over.  I'm still haning in there with the final two (Omar and Bell) and winner (Omar).

hanso, Bunk over McNulty everyday, coolest mofo in the police. Gotta believe Omar and his code will prevail all the way to the end. Bodie was just a true soldier and loyal, much respect for him so not that surprised he's made it this far. I was favoring the killers like Omar, WeeBey, Michael and Chris but not surprised most got knocked off right away.

My biggest surprise was Snoop doing D'Angelo, I thought D was going to get some love from the fans

This movie has a 31 % by top critics and a 56 % totall critics rating no rotten tomatoes.  I find it hard to see how this can be a B effort.  I tend to find the critics on RT to be pretty close to the mark.  If this is even remotely good, I'm looking at a possible rental.

Harry Knowles on AICN raved about it.  Now I know it isn't a good film.  I NEVER once agree with his rambling, incoherant and misspelled reviews.  Sorry Rob...can't take your word on this one.  It looks like Conan on Mars.

"Conan on Mars" would be a better movie than this by a long shot.

Just got back from a 3D viewing ... I have to say aftter all the neagtive reviews I was a little skittish about going ... turned out my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie! Good escapist fun! Shooting on location gave it a very real and gritty feel. Plus the fact there were no recognizable big names in the movie made it easier to see the charactors (and not the actors). No potential oscars for best actor or actress ... but for SFX, sound, editing ... a least a nomination. Nice twist at the end ... hope a sequels in the future. This could easily be a fun ride over several films.  (Still can't get over it's a Disney flick!)

I enjoyed the movie but the 3D was a let down. It didn't add anything to the film except the price of admission. It wasn't great, but it was entertaining. I'd go see a sequel. Just not in 3D.

Lynn Collins, who plays Deja Thoris, is Wonder Woman. I can't imagine anyone else playing the character after seein her in John Carter.

Just got back from seeing this.
Wow!

I honestly can't imagine this could have been done any better.
It stayed true enough to the source material, but deviated in the best possible ways.

This is a solid A in my book, and really close to an A

The ad campaign does not do it justice, and I agree with Wise and (insert cringe and audible sigh) Rob, that people may shy away from it because of the apparent similarities to SW and Avatar.
But really those similarities are contained in the trailers themselves.
The movie proceeds at a different pace altogether.

I also agree that the opening 25 minutes could have been tightened up a bit.
But to be honest, I'm really not sure exactly how.

One thing odd to me was the almost "comical" music that played during his first few minutes on Mars.
It seemed kind of distracting and kept me from really getting into the moment.
However, once the movie got going, I didn't really notice the music, as I was too engrossed in what was actually happening.
Whether that means there was an absence of music, or whether it just started fitting the scene better, I can't say until I have seen it again.

SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The movie itself was actually kind of like John learning to walk on Barsoom.
It seemed kind of jerky and having trouble finding its footing at first, but once it got going it really flew.
Not sure if this was due to the learning curve Stanton was experiencing, or just problems in editing, but it was a great film by the end.

If nothing else, this will definitely become a cult classic.
But hopefully word of mouth will carry this to enough to warrant the sequels...

Oh and Woola.
That mutt stole the show.
My wife couldn't stop talking about him.

Slightly ironic then that the protagonist and the title character of the book both spend much of the book naked or mostly naked... Carter arrives on Mars in his birthday suit and Deja Thoris is nude apart from some rather extravagant jewelery...

As per chervil...

Karas - I saw either a poster or a teaser somewhere that stated something like "Before Star Wars, before Avatar, there was..... John Carter". I believe Rob is saying they should have expanded slightly on that premise.
"From the creator of Tarzan." "Based on one of the first science fiction stories written over 100 years ago"

I've seen that commercial too.  And while a tag like "From the creator of Tarzan." might work, I fear that "Based on one of the first science fiction stories written over 100 years ago." would drive audiences away.  Joe Public doesn't want to see something old fashioned.  They want to see something new and exciting.  That something might be old fashioned AND exciting doesn't occur to them.
