Sanctum- you not only need a chill pill, but you also should try your hand at stand up, because that post was laughable.  Why does every famous person have a "mysterious history of sexual exploration"?  Give me a break.

hanso 11/10/2012 10:29:06 AM

This is bs, Lincoln ain't playing here till next week.

A lot of the counterpoint criticism of Lincoln comes when viewing his words and actions through the lens of today's culture. Yes, he was flawed, but he was also resolute. That being said, the mainstream view is also a bit of a rose colored perspective. Lincoln probably stands behind only Washington as the greatest leader to hold the office of US President.

Also.  I hope this film is more accurate than most those History Channel documentaries. It saddens me that the History Channel has become to education what McDonalds is to healthy eating.

Seriously, the "sexual exploration" rumor is just that. I'd rather see a movie dealing with how Lincoln enacted his policies than the tabloid-rich version Sanctum is hoping for.

I'm tired of the liberal's TMZ revisionist history version of Lincoln.

vagabondster 11/12/2012 7:19:56 AM

I think the real point of the whole movie is to say this.."Stuff was as polarized then as it is today, but they still got shit done, and so can we."

InnerSanctum 11/12/2012 12:07:39 PM

evilbeagle:  I was making a point.  Not saying I want "speculation" included in the film.   Sorry you didn't see anything else in my post relevant.  Glad I could make you laugh.  It brings joy to my heart.  No really.  Being totally sincere.

PhillipBrian:  I completely agree and that was my point.  If the History channel was a resource, it would involve Lincoln and aliens.  It is up to the individual to read several books on the subject to get a more accurate picture.  But, I assume most only know what they have read in a vampire book, were taught in school, or the two dimensional characture to which we have all been exposed.  Maybe this movie will go deeper than "Lincoln was a good guy who freed the slaves."

Swiss:  Again, the only thing a couple of people seem to pick out is the "sexual exploitation".  I'm not hoping for a tabloid movie, I'm hoping for an historicaly accurate movie.  That said, understand that I want real history...not Hollywood history.  You seem to put words into my post.  But, I hope this one makes it a bit more clear for you.

vegabondster:  I agree.

swisshammer 11/14/2012 1:40:56 PM

DarthBob: I'm a liberal (I wouldn't say Democrat, though) and I disagree with that depiction of Lincoln. So how, exactly, is it a liberal depiction? Liberal doesn't mean "an incorrect view of history."

It was refreshing to read a review of a movie based on something real, for a change.

The interview of James Spader was an added bonus.

The comments were spirited and interesting.

I found InnerSanctum's and PhillipBrian's remarks very insightful.

I have nothing to add as my knowledge of Lincoln is limited and based largely on what I learned in school and a novel by Gore Vidal that I read years ago.

All of this inspires me to learn more about Lincoln and this important period in American History, perhaps I'll start with Doris Kearns Goodwin's book.
