No movie needs the "gaps filled in"...sign of a bad flick...but, you can google online to learn about the "box".  It elaborates more on the legend of the Dybbuk.

The version this was "based" on had a bunch of fraternity guys obtaining the box and then being terrorized by the demon.  It was then put on eBay and was purchased by a man who had a great interest in its background.  He and his wife were then the victims of the threat.  It would have been interesting to incorporate online buying and a possessed item.  Something people do every day (well, purchase used junk and antiques online through ebay and craig's list.)  Anyway, all in was a more interesting concept than the resulting film.  Which wasn't scarey and more than a little thread bare.

Sadly I have to disagree with you. I thought it was a really well done film. Here's why. They don't use CGI so much to get the scare. They use mood, camera angle and suspense to make the movie scary. IMO it was going back to the old days, when the scare wasn't all about the blood or the monster, but letting you use your imagination. We are dealing with an overused genre, so how much inovation can get from this. For what they had I enjoyed it. My one concern was the moms boyfriend, disappeared in that one scene and no one ever wondered where he went and the movie never played it as if he was just gone with no mention of him. felt like the Director dropped the ball on that aspect.
