makabriel, I would say that the vast majority of the movie was strictly sci-fi.  It's really not until the 3rd act where the movie kinda a takes a turn toward horror.  Basically, the Engineers/Space Jockeys are badasses and will wreck your shit.

Higgy 6/8/2012 10:34:28 AM

Could everyone keep the spoilers to themselves, at least until after this weekend?  RKNGL you're kind of giving a lot away there.  I had to stop reading but that was WAY too much info.

Wiseguy 6/8/2012 11:14:03 AM

AWESOME, pure awesome. Yeah the bar was high and I admit I was a bit worried after reading some reviews but for me it hit the mark.

I won't comment because it's hard not to get a bit spoilerish as Higgy mentioned about some. Just don't go in approaching it as a direct prequel to Alien but like Ridley said it's definitely part of that universe and the ties are there and obvious.

My only gripe and maybe it's a nitpick, is that the film overwhelms with it's musical score. At times I couldn't even grasp what was being said. And one of the beauties of Alien was the silence which helped build palpable tension, that I miss and it just isn't here.

But I already cannot wait for the sequel. The unanswered questions and where it may lead leaves my mouth watering just as it was thinking about the possibilities of this film the past several months.

Oh and yes, it is a beautiful moving piece of art. Even if you don't like the film (I can't see how) it is gorgeous to look at.

As always, maybe my saying so doesn't carry much weight, but see it in I-Max 3D.

flinshadytoo 6/8/2012 11:46:11 AM

Oh dear, I must be hard to please as I left feeling extremely let down. Nothing new on screen, it is totally an Alien prequel, as the ending clumsily hammers home & anybody who says differently is deluding themselves.I can't go into details with the faults of this film without massive spoilers but I hope others can see through all the sfx & realize that the plot is not as clever as it thinks it is. I will try & forget this movie next time I watch Alien & try & keep the mystery of the space jockey intact.

Let the hating begin

Wiseguy 6/8/2012 11:55:07 AM

I hate you, you don't know what hell you talking about  ;)

Nah dude I totally expect some to feel just like that flinshadytoo. I think that criticism has merit, especially the actual ending. That was an obvious addition to satisfy Alien fanboys and totally unnecessary. They could've left that for the sequel by showing each cannister had different characteristic..... let me shut up

SarcasticCaveman 6/8/2012 12:08:46 PM

VTGamehenge, I may have missed something, but when did they say it wasn't the same planet from "Alien"?  I'm pretty sure that was one of the purposes of the movie - show the events that lead up to "Alien"...

violator14 6/8/2012 12:23:18 PM

Unfortunately an obvious spoiler of the film is that there is the question of "Oh no, the end of mankind is possibly at hand" etc. But since it's a supposed "prequel" to alien films, and we see that humans exist and everything is still ok in the Alien films, that everything ends up being alright. Unless im totally missing something.

Wiseguy 6/8/2012 12:26:01 PM

caveman It shows on the ship when they land or about that time. It said lv but it wasn't 426. It was 3 something, can't recall exactly.

XeroWarp 6/8/2012 12:31:17 PM

It was like LV-223 or 233...... irrelevant really, as Weyland could always change names to cover up. I felt that this film had a great first 1/2 or 2/3 and kind of fizzled out in the end. I totally hated the climax and felt it left more questions than answers. Visually, yes, it was great. Maybe, after a second viewing i might feel different.
