DC's problem with these animated films is they are trying to walk the line between gearing them towards comic book fans but still wanting them to appeal to kids.  That's why we get 70 minute instead of 90 minute or longer runtimes.  I am interested to see what they do with Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.  This is obviously a much more adult content story and I am waiting to see if they are faithful or if they water it down.

Tevii...could not disagree with you more about the animation.  Thought it was the worst of any DC film.  Lazarus is right about thhe proportions, they were terrible.  And then there was the part where Superman was "angry" and his face looked like he was constipated and desperately trying to force out a brick.  Horrible.

I liked wonder woman and the Red Hood movies, this one I actually feel asleep in the middle, it felt like one of the weaker Superman animated episodes. Why they can't do a sequel to wonder woman puzzles me, DC cited that it was due to lack of interest, yet if you look at the gross of each of the stand alone DC titles it's the 4th or 5th biggest earner. They just want to stick with Batman and Superman as the execs have no nerve.

Also now they own all the Wildstorm characters , I'm itching for The Authority, Stormwatch or Wildcats animation.

I think that they push the envelope on the PG-13 rating myself. For example in Doom Batman/Bruce Wayne is savagely beaten and buried alive. In Green Lantern: FF an alien chick is impaled on a jagged piece of metal.

Watched it last nite, not the worse animation movie I ever show....

I'm sorry I gotta disagree with the haters. I was skeptical of the art style at first but after seeing it in action, and in gorgeous Blu-ray I was good. It reminded me of the Avnegers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes art style. The actio0n was good, and I've always thought this story was good and will always be relevant. Since in this adaptation they amde it a more pollitical thing instead of it being violence versus non violence or heroes vs anti-heries.

I'm with Tevii

@Lazarus- These ARE edgy for animated films. At least for mainstream ones. There are curses, sure they aren't drop[ping F-bombs but there is plenty of language you won't find on Young Justice, Avengers, Green lanter, etc. They don't need to be ultra grahpic or violent. I mean you want blood and brains coming from a guy that has a floating glowing skull for a head. How does that work anyway? "Under the Red Hood" and "Wonder Woman" were both pretty violent. And this one was too when the Elite got their hands dirty. Just cause you don't see the violence up close and personal doesn't mean its not there. They killed like 24 people in one scene with the whole killing the government scene. So if WB/DC is scared to make another R rated live action why would they go R for an animted film. Comics aren't R rated so why should the animated films be?

I have to say that this was one of the better animated films from DC .  I liked Red hood wonder woman batman year one crisis and doom.  Ive said it a couple times on these boards that all of DC s animated tales have higher play rates in my home then any of the live action movies including Nolans Bat flicks.  Timm, Dini and McDuffie just get these characters in such a way that is so heartfelt and love the fact that there are no boundaries in their world.  Hollywood simply makes to many rules for these stories in order to appeal to 14 year old girls and whoever else.  THe animated stuff is for comic geeks plain and simple.

Superman is supposed to be the moral center. I dont want to see him drinking, depressed, cursing, or killing without conscience. I go to Al Simmons, Frank Castle and James Howlett for the edgy stuff, which I also thoroughly enjoy. The idea of Kal-El is that he is a beacon of hope and showing us that we could be so much more than what we are. I know being cynical is the IN thing nowadays but I grew up on Chris Reeve, man. I don't want Superman to lose his integrity. It's not naive or weak to value life or for our fiction to have messages. Remember Superman II? He kicked Zod and his cronies backsides by outsmarting them and since there was no Phantom Zone, they bit the big one. I know with great power comes great responsibility is Peter Parker's line but it applies to Kal-El too. Yeah, we all love the badass, but I love the fact that the Man of Steel is a Man of Integrity, too. Superman will NEVER be outdated to me. NEVER. And if anyone doubts that Superman can be a badass without killing like Frank Castle, I challenge them to look at his fights with Darkseid in the original 90s animated series after his cop friend was killed and when he fought Darkseid again on the last episode of JL: Unlimited.

Again, that is NOT animation... that is DESIGN. Animation is the fluidity of movement. Proportions and appearance is Design..

The animation in this is TOP NOTCH... the DESIGNs I agree: SUCK

tjanson 6/15/2012 2:37:43 PM

Tevii...you're splitting hairs...when its moving it's animated.  They animated Superman's face into a contortion that made him look like he was going to blow his ears off.  By your definition all an animated film needs to do is to move fluidly to be good.  Animation is the entire process...the design, the drawing and coloring of the cells, and then putting them all together to make them move.  People don't care about how fluid the characters move...they care about how their heroes look, and talk in an animated version.  And this was not good.
