Mania on this Day: Chainsaw Peek, Smurfness and Donnie Saw
By: Jarrod SarafinDate: Saturday, July 19, 2008
After another long week of the daily grind, it’s time for the Saturday edition of Mania Time Warp! Here’s the place where we take our tricked out De Lorean up to 88 mph and travel back in time.
Unlike old Doc Brown and Marty though, we’ll try not to screw up the space-time continuum because we know how disastrous that can be, don’t we?
So sit back, relax, and here we go…
5 Years Ago Today
Overview: Yep, five years ago today, the first full trailer for the much talked about remake of a horror classic was being passed along to genre fans. The 2003 film, which starred Jessica Biel and Eric Balfour, would be the first of a trend of horror remakes by producer Michael Bay, which is still going on today. Bay’s Platinum Dunes is currently remaking Nightmare on Elm Street and revising Friday the 13th’s origins.

3 Years Ago Today
Overview: Another clear sign that Hollywood plans frequently fall through the cracks. Three years ago today, you Maniacs were discussing the news that a Smurf trilogy was planned after Paramount Pictures grabbed the rights. The plan was to have the first film in theaters by 2008, the characters’ 50th anniversary but obviously that didn’t take place.
In fact, the idea hasn’t died at all even if it did sit in Development Hell longer than expected. On June 10, 2008, we passed along the latest news that Columbia Pictures now has the rights and is moving forward on adapting the cartoon.
1 Year Ago Today
Overview: Any horror Maniac knows full well that most horror villains are never really dead. Well, the same can be said for certain good guys in those same horror films, even when the actor who played the character, wants him to die. Such is the case with Donnie Wahlberg’s Det. Matthews character from the Saw franchise. He wanted his character to die in Saw III but it never happened, leaving a door open from producers to allow the character to come back into the fourth installment.
