Mania on this Day: Collateral Cruise, Speedy Mishaps & Castle Delays

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Saturday, June 14, 2008

After another long week of the daily grind, it’s time for the Saturday edition of Mania Time Warp! Here’s the place where we take our tricked out De Lorean up to 88 mph and travel back in time. Unlike old Doc Brown and Marty though, we’ll try not to screw up the space-time continuum because we know how disastrous that can be, don’t we?

So sit back, relax, and here we go…

5 Years Ago Today

Ethan Hunt(Tom Cruise) in Mission Impossible III.(2006)

Overview: In the realm of Mania past, it was at this time in history when news crossed the wires that Tom Cruise and prior commitments were pushing the anticipated third installment of the MI franchise. Paramount executives had the movie planned for May 2004 but Cruise was opting to film Michael Mann’s Collateral first before jumping back into his Ethan Hunt role. Little did anyone know, the movie was going be pushed back much farther than just a few months, eventually hitting theaters May 2006.

3 Years Ago Today

Emile Hirsch as Speed Racer in SPEED RACER (2008).

Overview: Another clear sign that sometimes scoops can go haywire so early into pre-production of a high profiles film. As Yoda says, the future is always in motion. Three years ago today, a scooper sent in word that Vince Vaughn was a sure bet to play the villainous Racer X. Obviously, that didn’t come to fruition but to see what else the anonymous scooper sent in, click the link above.

1 Year Ago Today

Leon Belmont faces...something...in CASTLEVANIA: LAMENT OF INNOCENCE.

Link: White Seeks Teeth into CASTLEVANIA

Overview: One would think that with a director attached exactly one year ago today, we would have plenty of news, photos, etc for the big screen adaptation of the best selling videogame Castlevania. But that was before the WGA strike reared its devastating head and delayed projects, this project being one of them. Check out the link above to see what was going on a year ago today and what a lot of you fellow Maniacs were saying in regards to the new director.

Even 3 years ago Speed was getting a lukewarm reception. Too bad we can't go back in time and show the Wachowskis what not to do with Speed Racer.

Jarrod, if you're reading this, I'm wondering what you thought of Speed Racer.

Castlevania is now officially in development hell or is it. I thought Anderson still had it on his schedule. Too bad if we don't get it, I'm not a gamer but I have enjoyed more than a few adaptations even as they keep getting panned.

Cruise just wanted to be a bad guy so bad IMO that he pushed MI back. Well at the time he proved that he could still pull off good numbers at the bo even as a baddie.

Haven't watched it yet, Wise. I was a fan of the anime but just haven't had a chance or strong desire to watch the movie yet.

From what I can gather, that seems to be the biggest wrong that WB and the Wachowskis made with the film. They didn't really target it a specific demographic...or if they did, they didn't do it well enough. A friend of mine inside the theatrical industry said much of the same thing. No single demographics seem to want to watch the movie or if they do, they're not in a hurry to watch it, more content to wait for the DVD.

True on Cruise...He hadn't played a villain in sometime and that must have weighed in on him pushing MI:III years back.
