Mania Time Warn

Mania on this Day: Hellboy Revealed, Yeoh Misses & Mach 5 Shines!

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Saturday, May 31, 2008

After another long week of the daily grind (or a short one in this case), it’s time for the Saturday edition of Mania Time Warp! Here’s the place where we take our tricked out De Lorean up to 88 mph and travel back in time. Unlike old Doc Brown and Marty though, we’ll try not to screw up the space-time continuum because we know how disastrous that can be, don’t we?

So sit back, relax, and here we go…

5 Years Ago Today

Ron Perlman returns to keep evil at bay in HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY(2008).

Link: First Full-Body Looks of Hellboy and Abe Sapien!

Overview: With the sequel---Hellboy II: The Golden Army---hitting theaters in a few short weeks, it seems fitting that 5 years ago today, we Maniacs were getting our first good look at Hellboy himself Ron Perlman in red body make-up. At the time, production for the first film was only 3 months in and fans were wondering what Ron would look like in full body gear. Same questions for Abe. To see that first reveal of the characters, click the link above!

3 Years Ago Today

Michelle Yeoh as Yu Shu Lien in CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON.

Link: Michelle Yeoh for MI: III and LAMBS Prequel?

Overview: In the realm of Mania three years ago today, news came down the wires that Asian star Michelle Yeoh was in position to be cast in both Mission Impossible:III and the upcoming Silence of the Lambs Prequel. If you don’t remember seeing her eventually in both films as they finally hit theaters, it’s not your memory playing tricks with you. At the time, she confessed to the two films having shooting schedules conflicting with her current projects and nobody was willing to budge.

Doubtful that Michelle regrets the decision on the whole. She was, at the time, filming Jet Li’s Fearless and the sci-fi Danny Boyle masterpiece Sunshine.

1 Year Ago Today

The Mach 5 from SPEED RACER (2008).

Link: First Look At SPEED’S Mach 5!

Overview: In a clear sign that a lot can wronge in a year of public marketing for a movie, this is the place where you can see we find that one year ago today, we were getting our first look at the new Mach 5 as it would be in the complete CG Wachowski film. Maniacs were interested and the car design in the link above piqued those interests around the nation but not enough to stop the film from bombing this month, exactly a year later. If only the producers had a time machine of their own…

I saw the Mach 5 at SDCC last year. Cool looking car. Still didn't make me want to go see the movie though.

Looking forward to checking out Hellboy 2. I thought the first one was pretty good but there is so much more potential there. Del Toro is the man.

Del Toro is indeed the man, DarkHeart.

Agreed.

I can't wait for July 2008.

After that glimpse of the Mach 5 it was all downhill once they showed the first trailer for me.

Jarrod, I'm curious as to your opinion of Speed Racer, I haven't seen you chime in on it. I believe you might've been on vacation at that pivotal moment of cinema history.

Hellboy to me wasn't great so my expectations aren't so high plus the plot seems vaguely similar to the first, with HB having to decide what side to fight for. DelToro is good but his best work to me so far and far away was Pan's Labyrinth. I expect The Hobbitt's films to surpass that though.

Also is Hellboy flying under the radar. Just doesn't seem to have any buzz surrounding it. I know it's a month away but there seems to be more hype behind Tropic Thunder and that's two months away.

Anyway next year at this time we can reflect on the Sex and the City film and we can all deny seeing it.

I just finished rewatching Hellboy. It was better than I expected. Definitely going to check out the sequel although I doubt it will be box office gold.

July for me is all about the Batman!!!!!

I'm looking foward to June more than July:

You Don't Mess with the Zohan
Hulk
Wanted
Wall-E

And this should be cool too, just for old times sake.
