Mania on this Day: Independence Props, Two-Face Timberlake and Robot Cash
By: Jarrod SarafinDate: Saturday, July 05, 2008
After a shortened week thanks to the July 4th holiday, it’s time for the Saturday edition of Mania Time Warp. But what was said during previous July 4th weekends here at Mania? That’s the question!
Here’s the place where we take our tricked out De Lorean up to 88 mph and travel back in time. Unlike old Doc Brown and Marty though, we’ll try not to screw up the space-time continuum because we know how disastrous that can be, don’t we?
So sit back, relax, and here we go…
5 Years Ago Today
Overview: Fittingly enough in the theme of stars & stripes, mass explosions and fireworks, this was a day in Mania history where a columnist broke down just why the 1996 film Independence Day is a worth while example of a “great Fourth of July movie!”

3 Years Ago Today
Overview: On this particular day in the summer of 2005, an explosion of fan-boy fireworks went off at around the same time. A rumor popped up just three weeks after Batman Begins premiered in theaters, the rumor causing mass panic and hysteria which would make The Joker proud.
You can guess the rumor by the article title above but click the link to check out the numerous comments there to see what fellow Maniacs were saying back then.
1 Year Ago Today
Overview: Nothing fits the bill for this holiday then Giant Somethings (space ships, robots, dinosaurs) blowing or eating stuff up. Last year was no different with Transformers hitting theaters for the first time. With all the excitement for the film, many wondered how many all-time records the giant robots against Spider-Man 3, which opened earlier that summer.
In the end, the record above would be the only real record achieved. Despite the anticipation, Transformers is ranked 28th on the All-Time Openers with a weekend debut of $70.5 million, nowhere near Spidey’s opening record of $151.1 million.
Have a great and safe weekend fellow Maniacs!

You know it surprises me though that 300 and the Da Vinci Code and even the Simpsons beat out Transformers. Not that they were better or worse, just that I wouldn't ha e that they'd be as big an opener.
So far only one movie this year has cracked the top ten. Well two did, but Indy kicked Iron Man out of tenth to eleventh soon enough. Another example of a poor movie (Indy) making huge dollars.
YAHOOOOOOOOOOO, TDF starts to day.
