Mania on this Day

Mania on this Day: Lee's Hulk, Buffy Alice & 60 Days

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Saturday, June 21, 2008

After another long week of the daily grind, it’s time for the Saturday edition of Mania Time Warp! Here’s the place where we take our tricked out De Lorean up to 88 mph and travel back in time. Unlike old Doc Brown and Marty though, we’ll try not to screw up the space-time continuum because we know how disastrous that can be, don’t we?

So sit back, relax, and here we go…

5 Years Ago Today

Ang Lee, director of The Hulk(2003).

Link: HULK 2 Being Written

Overview: Five years ago today, Ang Lee’s version of The Hulk was hitting theaters around the country. In fact, you can read Mania’s review of the film here as it was posted back then. With the film hitting theaters, there was already discussion on the same scribes penning a sequel that would have been focused on the grey hulk. As we know, they didn’t go in that direction and it would be a long time before any new adaptation of “Hulk” was made, the latest having nothing to do with Ang Lee’s version.

3 Years Ago Today

Sarah Michelle Gellar in THE GRUDGE (2004)

Link: Gellar to Play ALICE in Wonderland

Overview: Here’s a clear example of how long it takes to get some movies made. Three years ago today in the realm of Mania, we were discussing Sarah Michelle Gellar getting picked to play the lead character in Alice, a dark twisted take on Lewis Carroll's classic tale Alice in Wonderland. To see what Maniacs were thinking about getting this EA videogame made for the big screen, click the link above.

1 Year Ago Today

Andrew B. Stehlin in 30 DAYS OF NIGHT (2007).

Link: 30 DAYS Of Night Has Been Doubled?

Overview: Last year at this time, it wasn’t out of the question that a theatrical treatment of the Steve Niles vampire comic would do well when it debuted on Halloween. In fact, there was so much confidence of it doing well, there was already talk of a sequel getting greenlit before the first installment even hit theaters. Things didn’t work out as well for the film as expected but you can see how confident everyone was by clicking the link above.

I see the Hulk got a good review here back then. I still like that movie and watch it whenever I catch it on tv. There are a couple of things I wasn't crazy about but overall a good film. I'm starting to think that the general public just can't accept the Hulk as a cgi character (the only way to do him right) going by the way both films have been received and dropping after the first week. Too bad because I love the Hulk.

30 Days and the Hulk had the same idea and who could blame them. The Hulk is a comics icon and 30 Days was a huge mini. Obviously comics success doesn't necessarily mean feature film success, again too bad.

I agree Wiseguy. A CGI Hulk is hard for the public to accept. An 8 foot tall 2,000 pound green guy is hard to pull off done that way. Not to mention that most people still remember the television series were he was portrayed by a real live man albiet a humongus one. I think that the nanobot part of the ang lee movie is what threw off that story. Atleast for me anyway.
