Mania on this Day: Punisher Targets, Voltron Delays and Spock Surprises

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Saturday, July 26, 2008

After another long week of the daily grind, it’s time for the Saturday edition of Mania Time Warp! Here’s the place where we take our tricked out De Lorean up to 88 mph and travel back in time.
Unlike old Doc Brown and Marty though, we’ll try not to screw up the space-time continuum because we know how disastrous that can be, don’t we?
So sit back, relax, and here we go…

5 Years Ago Today
Link: Two More Targets Set for PUNISHER
Overview: Like 2003’s Hulk, it seems kind of surprising to look back five years ago to see casting news for a film which is basically getting remade again. That’s the case with this week’s time warp back to this spot five years ago. Veteran actor Will Patton and Samantha Mathis were cast in The Punisher, a film starring Thomas Jane as the Marvel vigilante. As you Maniacs know, a new adaptation for the hero is coming to theaters again in a few weeks, this time the story closer to the darker Marvel-MAX series. To see what was happening on this day for the 2004 film, check out the link above.

3 Years Ago Today

Overview: Another 80’s era franchise which was scheduled for the big screen so long ago but fell through the cracks. Three years ago today in the realm of Mania, we were discussing the latest news that producer Mark Gordon was set to bring Voltron to the big screen.
Now, here we are three years later and Mark Gordon is still set to produce the adaptation yet to enter production. Justin Marks is in charge of the screenplay.

1 Year Ago Today

Overview: With San Diego Comic-Con being a theme here at our Mania home this weekend, it’s fitting to end this nostalgic trip down memory lane with something we got from last year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Back 365 days ago, we passed along that Paramount was confirming that a certain “Hero” was indeed playing a younger version of Spoke in J.J Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek film. News media was still under the impression that William Shatner would reprise his role of an older Kirk as well at that time though that bit of news has fallen through the cracks. If he indeed does come back, that bit hasn’t been confirmed as of yet.

I remember being pretty happy about the Punisher back then but I'm happier now looking forward to this new one. I hope TJ regrets walking away from it.

Voltron never appealed to me so it can stay d.h. for all I care but if they do make it you can bet I'd be there opening day.

Looking at the ST link is funny to see hanso talking about TDK back then.

Didn't Thomas Jane walk away because the sequels were supposed to be lower budget direct to video releases? If that's the case, then it sucks because Jane is an underrated actor and I usually enjoy his movies. Would also suck because after they sign on someone else, they decide to boost the budget and shoot for a big release. IF that is really what happened...
