Mania's Top Maniacal Rumors: Hulk Hints, Holy Superman and Return of Spidey's Old Foe

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, April 25, 2008

It’s time for another edition of Mania’s Most Maniacal Rumors, where we blow the lid off the week’s juiciest gossip and hush-hush industry whispers. If you have a rumor you want to contribute, we’re all ears. Just send it to jarrod@mania.com.

Hulk’s Super Soldier Formula Hints at Avengers and Captain America Films?

Rumor: In Mania’s coverage of the NYCC Hulk Panel, columnist Robert Trate confirmed the SSF appearing in the Hulk film and asked Marvel headman and producer Kevin Feige about the possibilities.

Source: Mania

Mania Verdict: TRUE—Kevin was cryptic by saying it’s definitely an “Easter Egg” but there can be no doubt that with Captain America and Avengers coming soon to theaters, they’re laying the groundwork with a wider story arc.

Superman an Angry God?

Brandon Routh looking down upon Earth in SUPERMAN RETURNS(2006).

Rumor: A wild rumor popped up from Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull telling Hamilton students that the next Superman film will focus on him being an “angry god.”

Source: Hamilton.edu

Mania Verdict: FALSE—We find it more likely that he was kidding around at a conference in Wellin Hall. Previous reports confirm that the sequel, Superman: Man of Steel, will include more action.

No Incredible Fighting Between Leterrier and Edward Norton?

Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) examines a vial in THE INCREDIBLE HULK(2008).

Rumor: After weeks of rumors surrounding the post-production editing process of the Incredible Hulk, director Louis Leterrier denies the reports of a split between him and producer-star Edward Norton on the “final cut” of the film.

Source: Various from NYCC

Mania Verdict: FALSE—He may be denying the internal strife in the quote below but there have been confirmations of the issue and there was no Norton presence at the NYCC in promotion of the film. Here’s what the director had to say.

"It's so unsettling, because it's not true," Leterrier said.  "Listen, when you have problems [on a film], you learn what to do. Everyone comes to an agreement where everyone agrees to say it was one thing or it was another thing. But [this controversy] is not a real thing, so I am saying one thing and [producer] Kevin [Feige] will say another thing, because it's a non-issue."

Willem Dafoe Returns in Spider-Man 4?

Willem Dafoe stars as Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN

Rumor: Rumors have popped up whether actor Willem Dafoe will return as the deceased Green Goblin after the actor indicated “maybe” in an interview.

Source: If Magazine

Mania Verdict: FALSE—There is no reason for him to return. He gave the magazine a maybe, depending on if Raimi returns. But we know Raimi has his hands full with a new Jack Ryan trilogy and a new Wizard’s Rule television series. Tobey Maquire also has a lot of projects lined up, and with Harry no longer in the picture, it seems likely a fourth Spider-Man will feature an all new cast.

No More Justice League?

A snapshot of the Justice League.

Rumor: Rumors have been running for months whether this film will ever happen—from WGA issues to location snafus—and the latest from Joel Silver says the project has been tabled.

Source: CHUD

Mania Verdict: MAYBE—Silver has no reason to lie here and the pre-production issues of Justice League Mortal have been a mess to begin with. Lack of news surrounding the project recently seems to hint that Silver is correct here. We’re sure a Justice League film is coming eventually…but not anytime soon.

Speed Racer 2 on the Horizon?

Snapshot of a scene in SPEED RACER(2008).

Rumor: Before the original even comes out (May 9), producer Joel Silver was once again at the heart of the rumor mill, hinting that they have sequel plans.

Source: Collider
Mania Verdict: MAYBE—In this day and age, sequels are always planned for projects as high profile as this one. But let’s look at the box office results for the first installment before even commenting on a sequel.

Marvel has the right idea in regards to tying together their respective properties. Take a hint WB/DC!

I read somewhere where Silver said the Wachowskis had a great idea already for the sequel, so if it makes $$ you know we'll get one. JL looks like it will never get off the ground, sucks cause I want to see that flick get made. Hopefully they will wise up and recast since they keep pushing the release date. You know Spiderman 4 needs the LIzard and a new cast. Hope Hulk doesn't turn into shit with all the stuff between Norton & Marvel.

You're right, the FF meeds a new director, someone who appreciates the comic book and the characters. Even though I like the actors it ticks me off when "The Thing" only stands about 5'8" tall and they made Richards a whimp. Spider-man does need a re-imaging too, get the Lizard in there (probably straight to DVD if made). WB needs to get their act together, probably got the same guys making "Smallville" wanting to make the JLA the same way... new oufits, the beautiful people actors who can't act being the heroes, and the older men with the money won't bite. Give it to Wolfgang Peterson, he'll make a movie or James Cameron.

Marvel's idea is beautiful, hopefully it will pan out and we'll have one cohesive Marvel Universe on film.....................Superman sequel needs to start with him waking up and realizing that Superman Returns was just a dream and then he needs to battle Metallo or the Prasite...............I hope that Norton feud was blown out of proportion but him not showing at the Con for a movie he supposedly had such a big part in bringing to fruition makes you wonder. I'm still pumped for the film. Also read that the S.Jackson as Nick Fury cameo was cut from the film......................JLA rumor I think is false, I read somewhere else where it said that Silver's comments were taken out of context and that he meant the film was being delayed because of shooting location. Really hope WB don't get cold feet. I want this film made........................Read same as hanso as far as Speed Racer 2 goes. It's nothing new with this sort of flick. If you're expecting a hit you're always thinking ahead to a sequel or two

.LOCK UP WESLEY SNIPES..LOCK UP WESLEY SNIPES, I've had my runins with the IRS and I didn't do anything as egregious as Snipes. Crying "well intentioned" or "ignorance" is no excuse for breaking the law. He was lucky he was found not guilty for the more serious charges he was brought up on in spite of the evidence that he was guilty. 3 years should be the least he does

hanso • Apr 25, 2008, 06:16am •
You had run ins with the IRS? I bet you didn't have Denzel Washington or Woody Harrelson writing a letter to plead your case though, lol. We must free Snipes, he needs to continue making straight to DVD films, the market will fail without him. It takes Van Damme, Segal & Snipes to make it work! ..................I will start a free wiseguy campaign should you fall wiseguy, do not worry.

I think it's ridiculous to lock up someone like Snipes for 3 years! Jails are crowded enough with real criminals. Make him pay restitution, put him on probation and send him on his way. Save the jail cells for the rapists, murderers and child molesters. God knows we have enough real criminals out there that need to be put away!

It's great to see Marvel laying the groundwork for their universe in film with the mentioning of the Super Soldier Formula and Stark's meeting General Ross in the bar. If Marvel ever gets the rights for all of its properties back it would be great to see Spider-Man make a cameo in a Fantastic Four movie talking to Johnny on a rooftop, or Daredevil make an appearance in a Luke Cage movie.

The "angry god" comment could easily have been misinterpreted. There were a lot of comments about the godlike imagery used by Singer in Superman Returns (remember Superman flying high into the sun's rays after being shanked by Luthor). With all of his amazing abilities Superman is almost godlike, so the whole "angry god" could have just meant that he gets really pissed off in the next movie. I'm still hoping that my idea (see my blogs) gets made, because it would be one hell of a movie.

Norton not being at NYCC could spell trouble for the film, unless it was just a scheduling problem. Hopefully the movie's just that good that Norton and the director are having disagreements on what to leave out and keep in. I have my doubts, but I did like the trailer.

I'm really hoping Justice League gets made. I want to see this movie, but I have my doubts that this project hasn't fallen into turnaround. I read somewhere that people working on preproduction have been given their pink slips. That's definitely not a good sign. Maybe they should have gone with the whole motion capture idea that was thrown around when this project was first mentioned last year.

I know I'll see Speed Racer, and with the W Bros. at the helm, I'm sure the movie will be entertaining, but movies based on shows many of us loved as kids haven't fared so well on the big screen. I'm worried that the style of the film is going to be too big of an assault on the eyes and ears. In some of the scenes it just looks like there's too much going on. It's anime come to life, and I'm not a big anime fan, so maybe that's why I'm having a little trouble with the visuals.

Looking forward to seeing Iron Man next weekend, and chomping at the bit for The Dark Knight. This should be a great summer for movie fans!

I agree with Hanso, and fft5305. Let the man go. Let him make a new blade Movie, and pay his Taxes with that. "I've had run in with the IRS" I'm surprised to see you using that motive Wiseguy. You are always so level headed so why wish the misfortune of the harshest IRS penalty on a man, when you yourself have had issues with the IRS. You know how much it sucks, so why would you want others to know that pain. I think he'll go free, hell they just want their $$$. ... (the rest of this post is not meant to offend but to be tounge in cheek) Besides only poor black men go to jail, look at OJ ...He's till free after admitting to blacking out, and coming to with a bloody knife in his hand and a well, you get the picture. If they let OJ go they need to let Snipes go. Snipes makes way better movies (less touchdowns, but better movies) "AM I MY BROTHER'S KEEPER?!?!"
