Mania's Top Maniacal Rumors: Let's Talk War Machines and Wonder Woman

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, May 02, 2008

It’s time for another edition of Mania’s Most Maniacal Rumors, where we blow the lid off the week’s juiciest gossip and hush-hush industry whispers. If you have a rumor you want to contribute, we’re all ears. Just send it to jarrod@mania.com.

Iron Man’s War Machine Coming Sooner Than We Think?

Rumor: With Iron Man opening wide today, there has been no shortage of press clippings on the tent pole film. One follows a long lasting rumor—Rhodes’ War Machine may already be planned for the sequels.

Source: Various

Mania Verdict: TRUE—Based on numerous interviews, director Jon Favreau plans this as a trilogy story and wants the War Machine arc with Stark’s friend Rhodes (Terrance Howard) right in the middle of it.

"I have one, two, and three in my head, because if you don't then it seems like you're just re-treading the same ground. No, the way the Mandarin fits in, the way War Machine fits in, whether or not Obadiah [Stane] pops up again… There's a lot. The relationship of Pepper, so we're really thinking and I'm watching the horizon as I do these movies so that it all makes sense as you watch them altogether. I mean, look at how well 'Lord of the Rings' works. It builds to a climax, compared to movies where it just feels like you're redoing the same thing over and over again to diminishing returns."

Troubles for the Wonder Woman Project?

Alex Ross artwork from WONDER WOMAN: SPIRIT OF TRUTH

Rumor: Rumors have been swirling that while the Justice League film may be dead or dying and a separate Wonder Woman project is in far worse shape, due to script issues.
Source: Various

Mania Verdict: TRUE—Producer Joel Silver confirmed the reports below.

"I've been working on those two for a long time and, well, it took me 20 years to get 'Speed Racer' going—and whilst I wouldn't want to spend that long again on a film—I'm going to be struggling with these two for a while. I'm trying to get the right versions of the story."

24’s Season 7 Africa Story Arc is Happening?

Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) saves Marilyn and Josh in 24: 2:00 AM to 3:00 AM.

Rumor: Last summer, reports were flying that season 7 of Fox’s 24 would be drastically different then previous seasons and would be shot on location in Africa. The idea was scrapped by Fox executives because of budgetary concerns. New rumors are flying that this fall’s two-hour prequel movie will have that Africa story arc reinserted.

Source: TV Guide

Mania Verdict: TRUE—The series will have been off the air for over a year and a half by the time this two hour prequel movie hits the airwaves, and 24 creators are looking to inject some life back into it by having that arc re-introduced.

Transformer Action at the Arizona Air Force Boneyard?

Starscream goes on a rampage in TRANSFORMERS(2007).

Rumor: A rumor popped up this week that some Transformers 2 action is set to happen at ‘The Boneyard’ in Tuscon, Arizona, where old fighter jets are lay to rest.

Source: SHH

Mania Verdict: TRUE—There have been reports that Starscream is taking more of a major role in this sequel and this rumor would definitely seem to fit.

Battlestar Galactica Coming to Earth in the First Half of Final Season?

The cast of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.

Rumor: A new rumor has popped up that the Battlestar Galactica’s search for Earth “may not take as long as some people think.”
Source: Michael Ausiello

Mania Verdict: TRUE—Since the WGA strike caused the final season to split into two halves (2008, 2009), it makes sense that the writers will have them finding Earth as a cliff hanger between the two seasons. Or perhaps even sooner.

Neil Gaiman’s “Death” Adaptation Not Dead After All?

Author Neil Gaiman

Rumor: Neil Gaiman’s Death: The High Cost of Living may be still getting a theatrical adaptation, based on what the author had to say this week.

Source:
MTV

Mania Verdict: MAYBE—Gaiman is saying that the project isn’t dead fully after New Line closed shop but that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to see the adaptation over in its new parent home of Warner Bros. Here’s what he had to say:

"Death was with New Line, and now that New Line has sort of expunged itself from existence, we are figuring out right now where in the Warner [Bros.] family it will be and what is happening with it," Gaiman said. "It's not back to the drawing board — we do have a script and a lot of stuff, we have people like Shia LaBeouf who have said, 'I want to be in this thing' — but we're figuring out where and when."

All I can say is kill the god damn Wonder Woman project...She has the same appeal as an Uwe Bole project...Now that I think about it, let Uwe do Wonder Woman so that way it can die for good...On another note, I like what I am hearing from the the camp of Iron Man...

War Machine is a no brainer and we may finally get a great black superhero on the big screen, not including Blade who most wouldn't consider a superhero.......................Save WW for the JLA film. A solo project, I fear would not fare well.......................Starbuck has been on that mission for a couple of weeks so it would make sense that they finally find it. They're not just going to have her doing circles in space for half a season..

With Rhodes comment in the one scene near the end of the movie, I can definitely see him becoming War Machine in the second Iron Man movie. Stark painted a bullseye on himself at the end of the movie, so it would make sense that Rhodes will have to don the suit...It's too bad about the Wonder Woman and Justice League movies. I would have liked seeing them both. Between Iron Man, The Dark Knight and The Incredible Hulk, Super hero movies are probably going to bank more than $500 million this summer. Money gets the suits motivated to make movies, so I'll bet a lot of genre movies get fast-tracked to cash in on what could be the next wave of success...Looking forward to seeing 24 again in the fall...Transformers was ok for me, nothing special, but I'd go see another one as long as that terrible government agent character isn't in the film. He ruined the movie for me...I'll be happy when they find Earth in Battlestar; the crazy Starbuck schtick is getting old for me...I know he's an amazing writer, but I've just never gotten into Gaimen's writing...Go see Iron Man and don't leave the theater until after the credits roll. Sitting through the five minutes of rolling names is worth the 15 second payoff!

And then you guys complain that girls are not into comics or scifi! Why did Xena kick Hercules butt? (in ratings at least) Her story was as strong as the character. We need a WW movie with an amazonian princess who does not eat S**T; not a romantic fantasy movie. Us girls need our taste of superheroes. Long live Starbuck...

Iron Man & War Machine: Cool and expected.
WW: I truly hope this movie project comes together. She's one of the big three (Supes,Bats, WW)and deserves a big budget epic.
24 in Africa: That is absolutley fantastic. Too many shows are shot on
soundstages meant to be exotic locales. Doing it for real is great.
Never whated the show but I would what that story arc.
Transformer 2: Fine with me. No big fan but I'll still see it on the
big screen.
BSG on Earth: YES!!!

velgron, nice to get a female perspective. Perhaps you're right about the way to approach WW. It would be nice but so far the few female comic characters done for the big screen have flopped. Sure the stories were weak, etc, etc. but I think is part of the reason for the studio's cold feet. Not to mention that they don't seem to know how to approach the WW character.

From what I've read (I'm not seeing IM until Sunday), War Machine won't pop up until the 2nd, maybe 3rd movie. Howard has said he doesn't want to spin off too soon, though admittedly, he said he wanted that for selfish reasons - make the money off of the IM movies & increase the bank for a solo movie/series. Favreau has mentioned going to the Demon in a Bottle storyline for the 2nd movie subplot, so I could see Rhodey putting on the suit in #2 to help Stark out. Then #3 has the appearance of the War Machine armor to set up a spin-off. Of course, all educated guessing on my part...

MrJawbreakingEquilibrium • May 02, 2008, 09:55am •
I forgot where but I read somewhere that maybe the Demon in the Bottle storyline will influence the movie, that Rhodey will take over as War Machine but will be driven crazy by the suit and then Iron Man gets better to reign his friend in. I think they say thats the way it happens in the comics though I don't know. I didn't read any Iron Man 'cept for in the Marvel Two in Ones and Marvel Team Ups.
