Mark Millar Confirms KICK ASS Project

The guys over at AICN reported last week that a theatrical adaptation of Mark Millar's comic Kick Ass was on the horizon with Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake) set to direct. Well, while we now have a confirmation from the creator that a film version is set to come, he was vague on whether Matt was set to lead it.

Here's what he had to say on it to Newsarama.

I can't confirm or deny any director at this stage. Sure, Matthew and I are friends and I think Layer Cake and Stardust tie with 28 Days Later as the best British films of this decade so having him onboard would be amazing. But at this stage I can't even give you a little wink, except to say that the director is already in place and we're looking to rapidly go into production once we're finished a polish on the final script next month. Some casting has already been worked out too, but I can say nothing beyond this annoyingly vague statement.

Come on...don't we all know how this is going to end??? Some filmmaker is going to have a sudden inspiration to remove the super hero element from this movie...and if there are any villains, they have to go too. They'll turn this movie into a film about a would be assassin while managing to rip-off the imagery of The Matrix...just like what happened to Wanted and its movie translation!!!

Yeah, but Wanted looks really cool. I never read either comic, so I won't know what changed, but I do hate when they change too much stuff in translations from pages to screen.

Well I only read the first issue so far and it was pretty damm good. I wasn't a big fan of Wanted but this one looks promising to me. And by the way metalwater, this is based in the real world and as of right now there aren't any "superheroes", just a kid that wants and tries to be one after being a comic geek all his life.

WANTED is available at local bookstores now and all you really need to look at is the cover to realize just how much they changed for the movie.... first, the man character is in costume... for the movie... not likely.
the more i watch the WANTED trailer the less impressed with the adaptation i get.
sure its a great trailer... but it doesnt follow the book.

Thanks Wise Guy. I know what it is based upon...but Hollywood will get rid of that real life super hero, with no powers, element...and just turn it into Death Wish meets The Matrix-with our hero becoming a high school kid who turns assassin instead of a wanna be hero. And when this happens...the creator of the comic...just as he did with Wanted, won't be bold enough to stand-up to the filmmakers and say..."Make my book into a movie in the spirit it was intended!!!" No, he'll just knuckle under again, and take a big paycheck!!!

metalwater, unfortunately you're probably right. If he follows the same line he appears to have done with wanted. Perhaps he should borrow Frank Miller's balls and stand up for his work. Then again maybe he learned his lesson with Wanted and won't be blinded by the money.
