Mark Millar Still Loves SUPERMAN

You have to really give it to comic author Mark Millar. He really is a fanboy, fellow Maniacs. Remember last year when Mark Millar told us that he had a story idea planned for a sequel to Superman Returns? Just one day later, we passed along word that he was denied the opportunity to pitch his story idea to WB and DC executives.

Why? Because he's a Marvel guy. Click on the links above to see what happened last October.

Now, as we're entering the heated moments of Summer 2008 between studios, Mark Millar is again talking his fanboyism for Superman. Fellow Maniac Hanso "aka The Joker" is passing along word that Millar is again talking about his love for the DC character. Here's what he told the Kentucky Democrat.

"Since I was a kid I've always wanted to reinvent Superman for the 21st century.

"I've been planning this my entire life. I've got my director and producer set up, and it'll be 2011. This is how far ahead you have to think.

"The Superman brand is toxic after that last movie lost 200 million, but in 2011 we're hoping to restart it.

"Sadly I can't say who the director is, but we may make it official by Christmas.

"But fingers crossed it could work out, that would be my lifetime's dream."

The question remains, fellow Maniacs, on whether he will even be allowed to fulfill his lifetime's dream. What with DC and Marvel being competitors in the market of comics, it seems unlikely. Still, you never know...

So I guess no sequel with Singer and Routh? I guess I am cool with that. I would love to see someone like Timur Berkineov (spelling?) take on Superman or someone like Peter Berg. Maybe even someone like Richard Kelly or Riann Johnson. SOme new blood pumped into it....although, Routh was pretty good as Supes, plus he looked a shitload like Crippleman Chris Reeves.

Yo Jarrod I forgot to tell you, since I couldn't refind the link I didn't send it, but Millar wrote on a blog, don't know if it was his or not, that the director that pulled him into the Superman project was an "action director" who apparently has a lot of pull in Warner Bros.

I'm not sure who this action director is that has pull in WB, hopefully it isn't John Woo cause I don't need to see slo motion close ups of Brandon Routh's face while white doves are flying around.
Anyway, since we can speculate I'd like to throw in the name of Wolfgang Petersen as a possible candidate but only because 4 of his last 5 films have been for WB, including his last 3. Also, if you guys remember Petersen was rumored for the Batman vs. Superman movie. I think the guy might be a possibility, not sure it's him but he might.

If Wanted does well, maybe Millar can get his dream project. I'm all up for the guy doing it regardless if Wanted does well or not. When there are passionate people trying to get something done, it usually ends up good. Look at LOTRs.

Predator showing some love for DK!! Yo, you can't write in all caps though, only when you have the picture up can you type all caps so you can intimidate better!

Whatever he does, it's gotta be better than Superman Returns. What a let-down. I still find it hard to believe that the same guy who made two great X-Men films was responsible for that turd.

Well.....Superman Returns rocks....It's not a turd. That's for sure. At least that's the humble opinions of me and Merin these past few years.

SR was one of the best "superhero" flicks of the past few years, no matter the haters.

And yep...Bryan Singer is still currently in charge of Superman: Man of Steel.

We shall see what Wanted does, Hanso and Gang.....Personally, it's going up against Pixar's Wall-E. I say it finishes without a shot.

But Millar is an exciteable person...hence his "Wanted 2" talk earlier this week. We shall see on Sunday's Box Office Report. :)

SR rocks? seriously? WOW. You,sir, just blew my mind! I was bored the entire time. The only thing I liked was the John Williams score that was incorporated throughout the movie. Just my humble opinion:)

Word, FLINT. It was so boring I fell asleep on the way to the theater.

So what's official here? Singer is still on board as of now if I'm understanding things. What's Warner Bros saying in relation to Millar's fantasy? Not knocking Millar's abilities. This could be good. But is this anything more than a gleam in his father's eyes at this point?

I'm right there with you Jarrod. I loved SR. Can't figure out why people are bored, no offence flint. It has an interesting story and the acting was fine. Maybe people thought there wasn't enough action, but when there was it was frickin awesome.

I'm not saying I liked everything about the movie, but I still loved it.

Now I'm confused about them not letting Millar, but they let Singer switch sides. Doesn't make sense to me.

"Now I'm confused about them not letting Millar, but they let Singer switch sides. Doesn't make sense to me."

Well, Millar is actually a comic book writer, not just making Marvel movies.

And they didn't let Singer switch sides. He actually asked if they'd hold X-3 for him so he could do SR, then come back and do X-3, and FOX opted to terminate their contract with him instead.

Millar, it seems, wants to keep his 'day job' but work on a competing movie.

This is why I like the days back when, before artists were "contracted" to one house or another. You could read a John Byrne run on X-Men, then catch his story in Superman. It was pretty much freelance stuff...

I like Mark Millar. I'd love to see his take on Superman in movie form....
