Just a day after it was announced that Dan Harris and Dougherty are not returning for writing duties in the next SUPERMAN film, comic author/screenwriter Mark Millar, creator of the Wanted comic, has indicated a super-eager desire to take over the writing for the next film. In fact, he's so excited about the prospect, he's willing to do it for free. Here's what he had to say about it over at his forums.

It's 8.58am right now, my guys at CAA get into the office in about seven hours and my call will be waiting for them to talk about this. I want to revamp Superman like Hillary wants thin ankles. Revamping this franchise is what I as given fingers for and so, invited or not, I'm putting my plan together now. I've been asked to work on half a dozen screenplays lately, but this is the only one I have ever truly wanted.

As most here know, I have literally hundreds of pages of notes and sketches just waiting for this opportunity. This would be my dream gig and, as a fan, I know exactly what this project needs to work. This has to be Superman for the 21st Century, keeping everything we adore, but starting from scratch and making the kids love it as much as the 30-somethings. I would honestly write this thing for free.

Anyway, my treatment is being polished as we type. Wish me luck. I want to do that Superman movie we all want to see.

"Revamping this franchise"? "This has to be Superman for the 21st Century, keeping everything we adore, but starting from scratch and making the kids love it as much as the 30-somethings"? Is Superman Returns being treated as a complete non-event now then?

drvertigo, I sure hope it is being treated that way. I am glad he is interested in writing this movie. As I stated before, Bryan Singer will not direct the sequel (if it can be called that). New Writers and then, a new director. WB has heard the fans and they seem to be listening.

I wish you luck...but I honestly thought that Wanted was perverse, racist, sexist and sick...and when I say sick, I don't mean it in a good way. Still I think the comic moved better than Watchmen, which is downright slow and boring. That said, however, both comics had some good, if not intriguing ideas...but the Marv Wolfman/George Perez version of Teen Titans was better than either book...as well, The X-Men of the early 80s was better, hands down. I have revamp ideas for Superman of my own...but whatever the case, anything has to be better than Bryan Singer and his writing team coming up with the script outline for Superman Returns, in two days, while on vacation in Hawaii...over cocktails--a true story!!! Now you know why the movie is so bad!!! BTW: I'll remind you all of the rumors about Bryan Singer allegedly being coked up on the set of X-Men 2...in addition to falling out ill on the set, and other erratic behavior. To be fair, he denies it, claiming he was having some kind of health crisis...but the reports of the incidence make no sense, unless they are indeed true. Now, do you want to further entrust and endanger the fate of Superman to this guy???

Wow Metalwater Wanted sounds a lot like Preacher (because that too can be described as racist, sick, perverse) but damn the writing was on the money. Wanted sounds like that and I am gonna pick up some issues. I wish Mark the best and hope he gets the job of writing the new supes movie. I'm one of the many who thought SR while really nice to look at failed to be entertaining. (Superkid? And Superman defeats giant rock? nice!)

If Mark Millar's script gets greenlighted, maybe they should just call it "The Incredible Superman" since he's so eager to revamp this franchise. It sounds a lot like Hulk being revamped into The Incredible Hulk. I'm in so long as his revamp doesn't include Lex vs Superman. We have 5 Superman movies, and 4 out of 5 were Lex vs Superman, even though part 2 was mainly General Zod but Lex was still a factor. Give me a PG-13 Superman flick!!

Much respect for your enthusiasm Mark but I have to ask what makes him think he has an idea of "the Superman we all want to see"? something for the kids and the 30 somethings? I doubt his ideas will be better than what Kevin Smith pitched. Once you have read that script you'll get the point.

Wow...Metalwater must be in tight with Singer to know all this stuff...And I will have to pick up Wanted for sure if it has all that cool stuff in it. Singer is an awesome director, but I'll admit that SR was a little bit of a misfire...to me it just needed more action. It lacked that. The only problem as I see it with this guy writing the script is that he might make it too Fanboy, which is what I think happened to Smith's script, and the studio rejected it. They want something that will appeal to mass audiences, not just the comic geeks.

It's the starting from scratch part that I like. I hope he gets his chance and gets rid of Supes jr., recasts Lois and bring on a new super villain. Oh, and get a new director. Millar at least knows comics and that's what gives me hope that he can pproduce a good story.

I was hoping Jeph Loeb would get the gig, but I'll definitely take Millar on the job, too, because I think he respects the history of the character.
