Mark Wahlberg in "The Happening"?

According to JoBlo, Mark Wahlberg is in talks to start in the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan film, The Happening.

The film, previously known as The Green Effect, is a paranoid thriller about a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity.

Mark would be playing Elliot Moore, a teacher and struggling musician. It's his struggle, along with that of his ex-wife and daughter, that we follow.

The movie is expected to be budgeted around $60 million and carry an R rating.

KJ's Take:  Well, if this turns out to be true, I would instantly go from on the fence to very very interested.  I think Wahlberg is great, and would love to see him in an M. Night film.  Does this sound a bit like War of the Worlds to anyone else?

I do not think Wahlberg is great, he have very limited expression. So far, he always do the same character. planet of apes, italian job, four brothers....i don t see real diiference in term of acting !

I do not agree exfan.... Wahlberg kicked ass in Boogie Nights, and then switched gears right back and went into action and comedies again... I agree with KJ, if he is involved it will get me excited about this picture. It does sound like a War of the Worlds deal, but from what I am hearing is centred somehow on plant life.... could be pretty cool.

Let me guess, in a strange TWIST it's Wahlberg's music talent that saves the world like in Mars Attacks.

Doesn't remind me so much of WotW as it does the "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill" (played by S. King) in the original Creepshow film.

On the run from a natural crisis? As long as it's not global warming it could be interesting. As for Wahlberg, ex you might want to take a closer look at The Departed, bad hair and all he delievers a great performance and dialogue that merrits a second viewing.

I like M. Night's movies, and if Wahlberg is the lead I'll definitely see it. I think he's a talented actor and has shown great range in Boogie Nights and The Departed.

I got a feelin this will be about plants coming alive and taking over the world... otherwise how do you "run" from a natural crisis? And that would validate the title Green Effect.

Hopefully this M.Night movies is actually good. I mean Girl in the water was ok. But Unbreakable, The Village, and Signs were all lame. But Wahlberg performance will be fine and he will probably be the only reason I watch this flick.

This is good news. I do hope this film works, and is a big hit. Shyamalan can be bringing us great thrillers for years to come, but if this flick flops, it might ruin his career.

MNS is wayyyyyyy overrated, The sixth sense was good, unbreakable was interesting, Signs stunk, Village stunk, Lady stunk. I would like him to make another good movie and prove me wrong, but I certainly wouldn't pay to see his movies right now.
As for Wahlberg, I think he has developed into a fine actor. Just watched Fear again, and he was really a good psycho in that, also just watched Departed, and I thought he did a very good job as the distrusting cop. besides that, Boogie nights was classic...your not the boss of me!
