August 6, 2004... Richard Morgan's near-future thriller MARKET FORCES is in development as a feature film. The rights were bought by former Warner Bros. executive Basil Iwanyk for his production firm Thunder Road to produce. Iwanyk will develop the film for Warners, and screenwriters Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi (THE TUXEDO, AEON FLUX) will pen the adaptation.

Morgan's novel postulates a time when corporations manipulate third world nations politically so they can achieve a greater profit on their investments. CEOs and shareholders are the ones calling the shots as to which tyrant will take over a country (or be deposed) or if the country will go to war. Executives eager for a chance to move up the corporate ladder don't just have to be savvy in business, they also have to win road races against other competitors that are to the death. The main character of MARKET FORCES was a resident of a ghetto that took the chance to compete in these death races where he won and started to rise in the ranks of the company. Soon riches and affluence were his, but just when he's at the top of his game the individual begins to question what he's done to attain his newfound status.

Richard Morgan's previous novels were ALTERED CARBON and its sequel BROKEN ANGELS. [The Hollywood Reporter.]
