Marlon Wayans has joined the cast & crew of G.I Joe, reports Variety. The trade says the actor will be playing "Ripcord", a leader of the military unit in the Paramount adaptation of the 80's toon/comic. Trade also says that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in negotiations to join the cast though we don't know the role selected for him. Rachel Nichols, Sienna Miller, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Said Taghmaoui have already joined the cast and director Stephen Sommers plans to begin shooting next month in Los Angeles. Stuart Beattie wrote the final screenplay with Paul Lovett & David Elliot and Skip Woods all contributing on earlier drafts. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Hasbro's Brian Goldner plan to produce the flick.

Plot Summary: The war-themed story will take place 10 years into the future with the movie will being a modern telling of the "G.I. Joe vs. Cobra" storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago. The premise of this fantasy is the story of the G.I. Joe team, led by Duke, and their "fight for freedom wherever there is trouble" against the evil Cobra Commander and his Cobra force. This storyline was an instant hit with kids in the early 1980s, spawning a highly popular 3-3/4-inch action figure line, comic book collection and animated series. The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the "Pit" as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series. And, in keeping with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy, the movie will feature characters and locations from around the world. Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established.

G.I Joe will hit theaters August 7, 2009.

i think marlon works better as an actor when hes not around his family, but we'll see

as for joesph gordon levitt, i wonder who he'll be...he was good in the lookout. he managed to reinvent his career after 3rd Rock from the Sun.

Alkl the Wayans's are very talented, they just get pidgeon holed for there comedies, which are a little played out these days. I wasn't paying a lot of attention to this film, but the more I here the more i am softening... here's hoping it's a lot of fun.

I agree that for the most part Marlon is a better actor when he`s not onscreen with his brothers. I always thought he was really good in Requiem for a Dream.
I am curious to see what character Joseph is playing. He has definitely come a long way from 3rd Rock. He was good in Mysterious Skin and really great in Brick.

Never seen "Requiem for a Dream", ponyboy, so I hope you're not just blowing smoke up our collective asses. The only non-comedy I've seen him was "Dungeons & Dragons"...so yeah, not sure how much I'm looking forward to seeing the Joes now.

Uh oh another bad omen. Marlon Wayans might be like that other Wayans guy that torpedoed D&D movie. *Checks IMDB* Wait it's the same guy!!!! Still pissed that this is not USA centered.

GIJOE, has never been "USA centered". At least not the cartoon, toys or comic book. Maybe the orginal doll was, but GIJOE was always traveling all over the world fighting the forces of Cobra.
Requiem for a Dream was this crazy movie directed by Darren Aronofsky about addiction. Its weird but really good. Jennifer Connelly and Jared Leto are also in it.

I have the same queasiness about Marlon Wayans joining this movie. This is the first casting that has me worried about G.I. Joe, and they haven't cast Duke, Destro, or Cobra Commander at all yet.

As for Gordon-Levitt, could he play Falcon? Falcon was a somewhat young and inexperienced officer (at least in the animated movie) and could be updated for this film. Granted, his character would need a LOT of fixing since the stuff he got away with in the animated movie would never happen in the real military.

Nothing good ever came attached to a Wayans brother. TKay4Zone, Dungeouns and Dragons wasn't a comedy? Seemed like a joke to me, a bad one. The Sci-Fi Channel sequel was actually better.
