Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada recently revealed some of the creative talent signed on for the publisher's HEROES benefit book, the proceeds of which will go to the New York City Fire and Police Departments and the American Red Cross in light of last week's tragedy in the U.S.
The creators thus far announced as being involved with the project include Stan Lee, John Romita Sr., Frank Miller, Todd McFarlane, Alex Ross, George Perez, Stuart Immonen, Jae Lee, Ethan Van Sciver, Nelson, Fabian Nicieza, Kurt Busiek, Michael Golden, Frank Quitely, Phil Winslade, David Mack, Brian Bendis, Chuck Austen, Joe Casey, Sean Chen, Alan Davis, Mark Bagley, Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, Neal Adams, Neal Gaiman, J. Scott Campbell, Kevin Smith (though still unconfirmed), Paul Pope, Alberto Porticelli, Jim Krueger, Phil Hester, John Cassaday, Dave Gibbons, Garth Ennis, Bill Sienkiewicz, Geoff Johns, Joe Kubert, Scott Morse, Kaare Andrews, Tim Bradstreet, Richard Corben, Mike Deodato Jr., Steve Dillon, Evan Dorkin, Lee Ferguson, Mike Grell, Georges Jeanty, Dan Jurgens, Sam Kieth, Igor Kordey, Adam Kubert, Mike McKone, Humberto Ramos, Robin Riggs, Steve Rude, Gail Simone, Brian Stelfreeze, Bruce Timm, Sal Velluto, Doug Wheatley, Tom Derenick, J.H. Williams III, Peter Pachoumis, Pierre Andre, and Quesada himself. McFarlane will reportedly be inking Quesada's pencilled contribution to the book.
Quesada reiterated the books' concept, saying that it is "very simple. The world's greatest super-hero creators honoring the world's greatest heroes! The book is a 64-page poster style magazine. Artists are asked to contribute an image that portrays our American heroes. I've discouraged use of Marvel Heroes for the obvious reasons but some artist are choosing to use them anyway. Artists are [also] asked to donate the original art and we will have an auction as well for the above charities. Writers are being asked to contribute a sentence, a paragraph or what have you that is suitable for the moment. Inspirational hopefully."
"Diamond had given us a quick solicitation and Quebecor and ACG have given us free press time," says Quesada.
HEROES is set to go on sale October 17 and will "most likely" retail for $3.50 with all proceeds going to the FDNY, NYPD, and a smaller portion to the Red Cross. In a break with recent policy, Marvel will overprint with this book so that "retailers can order comfortably".
Quesada also had a request for readers, saying, "This is one time that I want people to buy 3 or 4 copies!"
