The ties between the Marvel Comics movies and the comics themselves tends to be a bit more about the mythos, but when changes are introduced into the books, it's worth taking note as it could show up in the movies as well. Marvel unveiled on their site today the new design for the War Machine suite for Rhodey which will be coming along in it. This is all part of the new series called Iron Man 2.0 which begins on January 19th, 2011. The series is being written by Nick Spencer with artwork by Barry Kitson who has provided the new designs for War Machine which you can see below.

"Wars aren’t fought the way they used to be, and if Rhodey still wants to embody the cutting edge of military technology for 21st-century warfare, he has to evolve or die," says IRON MAN 2.0 editor Alejandro Arbona. "Dropping a tank into Kabul isn’t going to defeat insurgent cells, and zooming over North Korea in an F-16 isn’t going to shed light on possible secret nuclear refinement facilities.

"Rhodey’s new armor, an upgrade to become Iron Man 2.0, emphasizes stealth, recon, infiltration, and combat readiness when boots hit the ground. The War Machine of tomorrow is lighter, leaner, and more adaptable, with the ability to bulk up and fortify for direct confrontations favoring strength over slyness. And it packs quite a few surprises when things get really hairy."

Plot summary: New mission! New armor! New Iron Man! Lt. Col. James Rhodes is War Machine…the single most advanced one-man weapon of conventional combat. But wars aren’t fought the way they used to be – and when Rhodey has to face a mysterious enemy he can’t shoot, can’t bomb, can’t even see, he’s going to be forced to evolve…or die. Find out why War Machine becomes Iron Man 2.0 in the 3-part launch arc of this all-new ongoing series!

I stopped digging War Machine a while back. I don't like the way the character has evolved and not really liking the new suit either.

not bad sleek design but, what i love about the war machine is that when u look at it u say this is a "machine of war" this new one just looks like an ironman side suit ie  steath suit or hulkbuster, just looks like iron man pre paint job, i like the first sketches apose the final design, but i have a feeling that its going to have deployable turrets kind of like how the new transformers have when they use weapons.

I am with both you guys. I picked up a WM some time ago around Civil War I guess after a long time out, and was trying to figure out what the hell happened to Rhodey to make him the new Six Million Dollar Man.

And WM should look like if you threw a rock at him he would explode. Not have all the weapons hidden in armor. What he looks like is the suit case armor from Ironman 2 with a different paint job. He doesn't need to be slick and trim. He is a WAR Machine not Sam Fisher.

War Machine was good when he was on the run from Osborn and aborbing everything for weapons.  IMO
