Marvel Returns to Cleveland with Cap 2

First the Avengers now the Winter Soldier

By Robert T. Trate     October 02, 2012

Do they film anything in Hollywood California anymore? The Walking Dead shoots in Atlanta. All the Harry Potters were filmed in England. Now it seems that Cleveland Ohio is the center point for the Marvel Universe. First the city of Cleveland was a substitute for New York in The Avengers. Well one Avenger will now return to Cleveland for his Winter Soldier sequel.

The Greater Cleveland Film Commission Friday confirmed earlier reports that the film [Captain America: Winter Soldier] would be shot in Cleveland”, according to

The film will be shot partially there in 2013. Something tells me that the $9.5 million tax credit Marvel Studios received has something to do with it. The Walking Dead production receives a similar incentive from the state of Georgia.

Officially only 30% of The Avengers was filmed in Cleveland, the Cap sequel promises to film even more there.

Thanks to aegrant for the submission.

Usually not too bad a deal for the locals.  Whatever tax right off they give, goes right into local jobs.  So now the movie company can have set construction, catering, wardrobe, etc... while saving on not having to pay union rates for all of it.  Kick starts the local economy by selling goods and services - providing jobs - oh, and the sales tax brings back a good part of the original investment.

Unfortunately for Hollywood - they want the same thing here.  So why don't you give us a big tax break for filming here - but make it bigger, because here we have to pay those higher union wages.

Other than reality shows, or things that already have standing sets here, it is a wonder that anything still gets made in Hollywood.

Believe it or not, we have quite a few films shot in Oklahoma.  A lot of indi flicks, but quite a few that have become bit hits.  Again, we give a great tax credit.  And, no unions.

They are almost done building a new convention center here in Cleveland and there have been talks for a while to make the old convention center into a sound stage to attract even more movies to the area.

Yeah, I can't believe they filmed the Harry Potter films in England.  The nerve!  :)

I'm afraid Cap 2 may be my biggest disappointment of the Marvel Studios films.  But that's only because I loved Cap 1 so much, I think my expectations are now too high.  Hope I'm wrong.

I agree with InnerSanctum. People really don't realise how many movies, or at least parts of movies, get made here in Oklahoma. California should really pull their heads out if they ever intend to climb out of the mess they've created. But its great for the rest of the country, so I say bring on more productions to the smaller areas of the United States because its always nice to see places on the big screen that you see everday outside your window.

Yeah, there used to be a substantial film tax incentive in Michigan that brought quite a number of movies and TV series there. In the past few years, movies like Gran Torino, Jumper, the last Harold & Kumar, a couple of Clooney films, scenes from two of the Transformers movies, the upcoming Red Dawn remake and Oz the Great and Powerful and more were partly or all show in the state. Lots of businesses had built up quite a livelihood from it.

The current governor, however found the amount of money being given back to studios far too much compared to what the state was officially taking in. He cut it back severely and most of the film business dried up immediately. Parts of Dark Knight Rises and scenes from The Avengers were set to be done but were quickly moved to Cleve. They are more than happy to grab that work.

I would care if I lived in Cleveland.  Hell maybe I'll just drive over there and take a peek.

I love watching them shoot The Walking Dead every summer here in Atlanta (and the surrounding areas). I actually get to meet several of the actors at local comic book stores, Dragon-Con, etc. Now if I can only get a gig as one of the mindless zombies... Also speaking of mindless, The Three Stooges was shot in downtown Atlanta and a couple of surrounding areas.

X-Men : First Class was shot here as well. Jekyl Island doubled as Cuba... I doubt anyone noticed a difference. Also, Catching Fire is currently being filmed here...well, most of it anyway. The Hunger Games was shot just up the road in North Carolina and as most know, True Blood is shot down in Louisiana. Gotta love the South! It must be our southern hospitality. *wink wink nudge nudge*
