The Hollywood Reporter has broken probably the biggest news in all of comicdom today. Marvel Entertainment had announced that they would release a new picture in the summer of 2016. Only Marvel knew for sure which one, allowing us all to speculate. Would it be Doctor Strange, Black Panther, a sequel, or something else? Jump to the fact that the Man of Steel sequel, the Batman and Superman movie pushed back their release date to May 6th, 2016. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Marvel and Disney will release the third Captain America film... May 6th, 2016. That’s right Maniacs, we are going to have a box office showdown on our hands.
From The Hollywood Reporter: "the film Warner Bros.' Batman and Superman movie will go up against on May 6, 2016, is Captain America 3... Marvel films have all but owned the first weekend of summer for the past decade to enormous success, so all of Hollywood was surprised when Warner Bros. announced in January that it would open Batman-Superman on May 6, 2016 as well”.
Now a lot can happen between now and then. A lot of industry insiders doubt that the two films will really be released on the same day. What do you think Maniacs? As for my two cents, I see this as a great box office showdown. We will have that age old comic shop discussion, Marvel vs. DC played out for us on the big screen; with voting done by the masses. Yet, can’t we just see one film and then another, in the same day? Will Marvel and DC (and their parent companies) really be judging the dollars gained by the hour? It has never been done before and that is the appeal, for me anyway. The other side of the box office battle is if one studio withdraws from that day. Whichever film backs out first, supplies the other with enormous bragging rights.
Sound off below! I know you will.
