Marvel Rules Saturday at Comic Con

By Robert T. Trate     July 15, 2012
Source: Marvel.com

Saturday at its Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2012, Marvel Studios announced two upcoming films: "Guardians of the Galaxy," coming August 1, 2014, and displayed test footage for the very first time for "Ant-Man," to be directed by Edgar Wright.

With the announcement came the reveal of the first concept art for "Guardians of the Galaxy" by Charlie Wen (second picture below).

In addition, Marvel Studios announced the official titles to the Thor and Captain America sequels: "Thor: The Dark World," in theaters November 8, 2013, and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," in theaters April 4, 2014.

Check out all logos, plus the just-released "
Iron Man 3" logo, and as always stay tuned to Mania.com for more on Marvel Studios' upcoming slate.

For those of us here at Mania, the title “The Winter Soldier” makes us all crazy with joy. Yet we have to admit, we are already pondering who is going to play Rocket Raccoon.

Now with Ant Man coming - Marvel has again got the jump on DC (The Atom) .... sigh.

SarcasticCaveman 7/15/2012 1:42:48 AM

I tend to believe that Warner Bros. must be run by unimaginative, near-sighted morons, vitieddie, much to the chagrine of DC fans.

For everybody, on a different note - I was reading an article that making an argument that a JLA movie would never work, because it would have to be at least 10 times what Avengers was.  This was posed by a self-proclaimed DC fan, mind you.  He says that Avengers was so awesome and near perfect, how could WB hope to do something similar with even more iconic characters like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.  I can see his point, but I think it all comes down to the right script and right director.  What say the rest of you?

vitieddie 7/15/2012 1:49:59 AM

I agree Caveman ... anyway decided to repost the following here to get the discussion (rants, bashing, etc) going ... lol

Well comic fans ... interesting news from comic con ... DC just had one movie to showcase while Marvel had a zillion ...

What do you comic fans think of the upcoming Marvel movies? I know its exciting and all ... but is it too aggressive? Especially towards DC?

Is that why they chose these two movies? (to get the jump on DC?) What are your thoughts?

- Ant Man (DC's The Atom)

- Guardians of the Galaxy (DC's GL Corps and related space properties)

I mean they could have gone started with their numerous other different properties e.g. Dr Strange, Heroes for Hire, etc.

Ok trolling over ...

I agree that a JLA movie can work ... with the right lead in movies and script and director ...

Its just at this point it does not look possible with the way WB is running the show

doublerdiner 7/15/2012 3:25:45 AM

I agree as well Caveman. I think the right script and the right director would make a world of difference. And a great cast etc.

I am concerned that it may be affected by diving right in to a JLA movie without drumming up interest via stand alones first. That formula certainly must have had some effect on The Avenger's success, right?

I know the idea of seeing these characters in movies first and the teases in each other's movies leading up to Avengers definitely had me excited.

Do you think starting with JLA it will be as exciting or be as commercially successful without individual characters having their own films first?

 What happened with Black Panther?

I know nothing of GotG but just from the name I assume they'll be using that to tie in Thanos.  Would this be accurate?  Or is Thanos more related to Thor.'s Dark World?  What's dark world anyway?

deathjim 7/15/2012 4:43:16 AM

Ant-Man come on there are better things than that. How about Cable or is he thrown in with the X-Men mess.  Or how about Nomad theres got tobe something better thatn Ant-Man.

mlaforce 7/15/2012 5:18:51 AM

I am not a comic book reader but do love to see them truned into movies...Now Antman just sounds wierd to me, is his nemesis cockroach man? can't imagine a world where its hero is part Ant part human, I don't know, never have lol

Remember when Marvel superhero movies were a JOKE???  Wow how the tables have turned.  Unfortunately for WB the best thing that ever happened to them, Christopher Nolan, is bowing out of any more Batman films.  Sarcastic Caveman I agree.  Why would WB shuffle their creative feet when they are holding the rights to what could be the most successful film franchise of all time.  And even if it was the SECOND most successful, that would still translate into BILLIONS in movie, video and merchandisiing revenue.  Perplexing.

@ HANSO: GOTG are very closely related to Thanos as well as Nova.  Dan Abnett and Andy Landing basically did this Sci Fi opera that involved everyone from the Marvel Cosmic Realm.  I'm talk about from Ronan the Accuser, Super Skrull, Silver Surfer, Galatcus, the Kree, the Skrulls, Ultron,  The Phalanx, The Inhumans, and more.  The stories have been collected into the following Annihilation, Annihilation Conquest, War of Kings, Realm of Kings, and finally The Thanos Imperative.  I think they are all pretty awesome espically the one team member of GOTG is Drax The Destroyer who was made for sole purpose of killing Thanos. The roster in the comics was Star lord, Groot (A living walking tree who is the king of Planet X), Gamora (Deadliest Female in the Galaxy), Rocket Racoon, Phylla Vell (Capt. Marvel's daughter and at the time was the new Quasar), Mantis (she called the Celestial Madona but basically pre cog abilities, some kind of space kung fu, I think some TK, and Pyrokenisis)  Bug or Love Bug (he is from the Micro Verse but is at normal height through the GOTG series and he is a very agile fighter ala Spiderman), Jack Flag (kinda of low grade Capt. America super solider) and Cosmo a telepathic russian comosnaut dog (for real). Aw hell if you get chance just freaking wikipedia it but really they are really good reads.  There is also a future version of the team from the 31st Century that was first offical appearance of GOTG in comics.  Again wikipedia its alittle confusing but hey what comicbook continuity aren't right?

@Deathjim: SPOILER!  SPOILER! SPOILER! Pls read at your own risk, don't want to ruin the Capt sequel for you if you didn't know what the Winter Solider was about. Will Nomad was Bucky Barnes at one point in comics and next Capt. America is dealing with the Winter Solider who is Bucky so you got that.

@mlaforce: There's been like 3 dif ant guys or ant men but fav was Eric O Grady cause he would shrink down and like sneek into all female super heroes and villians I believe showers and take pics of them nude and upload them to the Internet and he later would join the Secret Avengers.  The other 2 are Hank Pym (the first Ant Man, created the Avengers' nemisis Ultron by accident, hit wife and fellow Avenger Janet Van Dyne aka The Wasp.  Was kicked out of the Avengers but later redeemed himself and is now the head trainer of the Avengers Academy) and Scott Lang (the second Ant Man and was a burgular till he reformed and eventualy join the Avengers).  Basically if your Ant Man you gotta redeemed at something I suppose but I over simpilify them again just wikipedia the hell out of them if your interested.

Sorry bout the thesis up there but I hope that helped you guys out anyway just realy excited about news of all these movies plus THE MANDARIN AS THE MAIN VILLIAN  IN IRON MAN! Great Scott it likes I'm at all you can eat buffet at Grandy's.
