Now that his latest film is out on home video, MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD director Peter Weir has made a move toward his next screen project. Weir is now attached to helm William Gibson's latest novel, PATTERN RECOGNITION, for Warner Bros. The Aussie filmmaker will co-write the film's script with David Arata (SPY GAME).
Unlike earlier Gibson novels, PATTERN RECOGNITION is set in the modern day. Cayce Pollard is a marketing expert, a freelancer hired by companies to evaluate the branding of products even though she herself has an aversion to overcommercialization. Pollard also has a hobby: she and a small group of others on the internet try and collect mysterious video footage that someone let loose on the Web, trying to understand its purpose (or if it even has any.) One day a client hires Cayce to track down the author of the mysterious video footage, a chase that will bring her around the world and toward a mystery that seems larger than life.
