The San Diego Comic Con is only a few short months away. The anticipation is already starting to build on the toy collector front as companies begin to jockey for our dollars. If you have no idea what I am talking about, the San Diego Comic Con is the pop culture bonanza of the year. It has absorbed movies, television shows and video games and still, just barely though, pays homage to where it all started comic books. If you can make to the SDCC but have little money after your flight, hotel room and ticket to get in fear not, the SDCC is a cornucopia of freebees. Posters, t-shirts and masks are just small example of what studios hook you up with. Now if you do manage to have some money to spend the SDCC is packed with exclusive action figures that you can only buy there (or on a website during or after the convention). The best ones are usually the ones in short supply. Rest assured as we count down to the SDCC the Toy Maniac will be bringing you all the latest on the exclusives.
It’s funny that when I hear and say Mattel I immediately think of Hot Wheels, not action figures. Recently Mattel has been booming with action figures. They have endured with their Masters of the Universe line and even have come to release classic sculpts and characters to appease the fans and collectors. Where they are really running wild is in the DC Universe. The DC Direct line still exists but now Mattel is releasing new figures to coincide with DC Comics, cartoons and the DC Universe direct to video films. More importantly, Mattel has acquired the rights to the Ghostbusters franchise. With a new film in the works and a big debut at the New York Comic Con the Ghostbusters are set for the big comeback.
There are several more Mattel SDCC exclusives (I only included the best here) and I’m sure they haven’t finished all of their exclusives yet. The best place to check out the exclusives and receive updates, besides my Toy Maniac Column, is Mattycollector.com. This is Mattel’s official site dedicated to the collector and fan. They also have a Facebook page but be careful not to confuse the homemade figures with the new ones.
MAsters of the Universe:
When I first saw pictures of He-Ro the Cosmic Warrior, I immediately said who the F$#% is He-Ro? I typed in He-Ro to the web and found nothing but some pictures (of which I already had). Apparently (thanks Wikipedia) he was to be the star of the “Powers of Grayskull”, a prequel spin off to the Masters of the Universe cartoon. Part wizard and part barbarian his story would reveal the secrets to He-Man’s powers. As we all know this never came to be. A picture of He-Ro in a toy magazine surfaced years ago and the legend grew. Finally He-Ro will join the ranks of the Masters of the Universe (see gallery for full picture). He will be in limited supply and available on Mattycollector.com after the SDCC.
DC UNIVERSE:
I got a glimpse of the multi-verse and the Monitors when I read DC Comics Crisis on Infinite Earths. I know there are different universe and multiple Supermans and it seems that with each generation some young writer tries to make sense of it all. I have never understood why?. Marvel has multiple universes and seems to do okay. Why does DC need to screw it up all the time with more stories tying up loose ends? Anyway there will be two different Monitor figures at the SDCC this year. Mattel plans to raffle off one hand painted 30 inch Anti Monitor each day of the convention. To get a raffle ticket for this you need to acquire 25 Anti Monitor points and exchange them for a ticket. Where do you get 25 Anti Monitor points? On the back of every DC Universe Infinite Heroes figure and multipack set.
Sounds cool if you already buy DC Universe Infinite Heroes figure and multipacks and open them. If you want to get a free 3¾ Anti-Monitor figure, ditch the raffle and bring 50 points to the Mattel booth and pick one up. If you don’t open your figures, fear not you can still buy one at the convention or on the Mattel site.
Hal Jordan, Sinestro and Abin Sur will all come in a three pack for their SDCC exclusive. What’s cool is that all the heads are interchangeable. Why you would want to have Abin Sur’s head on Hal Jordan’s test pilot body is beyond me but at least Hal can go from flight suit to GL in mere moments. With the Green Lantern about to get his own straight to video home feature expect the three pack to sell out pretty quick. The official name for the pack is the JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED GREEN LANTERN Origins 3-Pack. It will be available at the SDCC and on the site afterwards. See the gallery for Hal Jordan and Sinestro.
Love them or hate them. Understand their pop culture significance or downright loathe their very existence. So believe it or not Zan, Jayna and their space monkey Gleek will be getting their own action figures. Mattel is going all out and even adding light and sound to these classic cartoon heroes. What is surprising is that Zan and Jayna come together but Gleek is a special bonus and only available at the SDCC. Gleek will not be available online after the show.
Ghostbusters:
When they debuted at the New York Comic Con they blew me away. Not only where there Ghostbusters figures again, they actually looked like the actors from the movie (see article and images)! Now the regular figures will only be available on the Mattycollector site but the SDCC will have an exclusive Dr. Egon Spengler and Slimer. Egon will be complete with Proton Pack and gun. The kicker is this Egon will have slime residue on his uniform. As of right now “Slimed” Egon and Slimer will only be available at the SDCC. There is no mention of him being available on the website. So if you are not going to the SDCC who ya gonna call to pick one up for ya? Egon and Slimer just made my pick up list!
Wonder twin powers activate - The form of two crappy characters for super freinds. Great balls of Gleek I am so excited that I can finaly collect them. They will go well with my collection of super hero clumps from my cats litter box.
