Mania Box Office Report: King Iron Man

Ruling the Box Office

Well the summer has now officially begun. Which among you did not see Iron Man 3? Well the good news is, if you didn’t, you will contribute to it’s second weekend. Now I have already heard comparisons to The Dark Knight Rises. Those comparisons are going to happen. The only real comparison for Iron Man 3 is to that of The Avengers. Ray Subers, from Box Office Mojo, had this to report:

Kicking off the Summer movie season this weekend, Iron Man 3 lived up to sky-high expectations with an estimated $175.3 million haul. That ranks second all-time behind last year's The Avengers ($207.4 million), and is way up on the previous Iron Man outings. The movie also continues to do phenomenal business overseas, and is on its way to earning well over $1 billion worldwide”.

So Iron Man 3 now has the second highest opening of all time. Ray Subers also reported that Iron Man 3 ($175.3) took in more that Iron Man 2 ($128.1) by a little less than 50 million. The third film, in a series, is never supposed to make more than predecessors. That alone sets Iron Man 3 in class that few films are ever in.

Iron Man 3

Pain and Gain

The Croods

The Big Wedding

Oz The Great and Powerful

Scary Movie 5

The Place Beyond the Pines

The Great Gatsby is the big release this week. Being a fan of Baz Luhrmann’s work will get me into the theater. However, I’d be lying if I didn’t venture off to see Iron Man 3 again.

I'm planning to see Iron Man on Tuesday when my local theater has bargain matinees.

There seems to be some sort of mistake with the numbers of Pain and Gain.

The Great Gatsby is in a tough spot, despite DiCaprio being the top star in a remake that looks very good. I don't know about the 3-D aspect added to this film. Honestly I don't really see the need for it and don't see too many clamoring to flock to the 3-D version in droves.

Its taking a big risk coming out this month rather than its original December 2012 release. I think the idea of its move was in part of it to see if it has Oscar aspirations for next year where the field was already crowded last year for starters. The second reason being The Hobbit and Les Miserables was stiff competition and it was sandwiched in between them and never really had any promotional steam to where it would have been lost in the sauce.

They're hoping it can snag summer numbers, but the month of May is even more crowded than their previous December slot. May generally sets the tone nowadays more often than June use to be back in the day. Its feast or famine for it when its released. Don't expect it to topple Iron Man, but it should do reasonably well in its first week, particularly with older audiences looking for something that appeals to them more. Its the loaded competition the rest of the month that follows starting with Star Trek Into Darkness, Epic, Hangover 3, Fast and Furious 6, Now You See Me and After Earth (depending on how many people believe Will Smith, despite his box office clout, can actually get people to trust their chances on another M. Night Shamaylan feature).

I've already given my review of Iron Man on Friday and no need to repeat it here other than its looking like the clear odds on favorite to win the summer if its momentum continues.

Karas1, it's worth the full price. :)

Wow, this movie sucked on a major league level.  It was almost like I was watching TDKR all over again.

Have Iron Man be in the movie for about 20 total minutes.................CHECK

Have him do everything as Tony Stark............CHECK

Have the girlfriend save him at the end....................CHECK

No longer be Iron Man at end.............CHECK

I was waiting for them to have the little kid/sidekick have a suit of armor so he could take his place.  And WTF with turning the Mandarin into a second rate Ringo Starr impersonator?  Nothing about the 10 rings, no Fin Fang Foom reference.  Wow, this was an epic letdown, and I hope THOR is better.

Saw it Saturday and thoroughly liked it. The first was still the best for me though.

I really liked mostly Stark because unlike Cap, Hulk, and Thor movies the IM movies are all about RDJ as the character. You can change actors in the others but you can't put Tom Cruise in as Iron Man at all. I love seeing him as Stark in whatever scenario, suit or no. It's like a superpowered Arthur (Dudley Moore or Russell Brand). I enjoyed RDJ in a adlibbing /Shane Black script.

goirish83 you are so right...WHAT a let down.  Really, a FU to the franchase and the worst Marvel movie so far. Why tease the Ten Rings and not follow through?  Why not bring it all back to his origin? One verbal reference to the Avengers (and F-ck the NY reference) and it's from an 8 year old boy??  Why not make the Mandarin a REAL threat??  Kingley was great!! That would have been GREAT! Instead we get a Human Bomb/Living Laser/Unicorn mish-mash bullshit 'Batman & Robin'-stye villain set up...

What happened to the Infinity Gems/The Ten Rings?? One of the Infinity Gems was in the Mandarin's rings right?? Set up Guardians? Tease Thanos??  It's like this movie was made by an amature that completely ignored EVERYTHING that was great with the first Phase.

and the comedy-styleings of Iron Man do not pay off...did ANYBODY think that was funny? Ruffalo at the end and you play that like a joke??  It insults the entire Phase 1 and I hope that this is not a sign of things to come...

damn....680 million so far! were going to have to call the man of steel the man of pesos after this! lol

Daybreak0100 5/6/2013 12:38:03 AM

Not a terrible movie. But I can't say I was blown away with the film.. because IMO it didn't utilize everything it had going for it. A lot of it was 'neat' and 'cool' and I really had a few good laughs. But it's not how I would've done it..

MOS for the win ;)

SarcasticCaveman 5/6/2013 1:44:21 AM

I'm still wary of MOS...Superman Returns had great previews also.  At least MOS of steel doesn't look like it's going to be cinematic rim job for Donner though.  But Marvel will still rule 2013...we still have Thor: The Dark World to look forward to.  I don't see MOS making more money than both of them combined.
