It's hard to believe that a director would openly reveal plot details about a sequel before the original film even hits theaters but that seems to be the case here.  With the debut of Warner Bros.' Terminator Salvation rapidly approaching,  Film Journal caught up with director McG to talk about what fans can expect with the second installment of the planned trilogy. And the director was more than open about what he foresees in our apocalyptic future.

It seems the sequel could involve some time traveling for John Connor in his battle to save mankind from the machines.

"I strongly suspect the next movie is going to take place in a [pre-Judgment Day] 2011," McG reveals. "John Connor is going to travel back in time and he's going to have to galvanize the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion. They've figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than one naked entity. So you're going to have hunter killers and transports and harvesters and everything arriving in our time and Connor fighting back with conventional military warfare, which I think is going to be f*cking awesome. I also think he's going to meet a scientist that's going to look a lot like present-day Robert Patrick [who famously played the T-1000 in Terminator 2], talking about stem-cell research and how we can all live as idealized, younger versions of ourselves."

This upcoming first film stars Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin, Moon Bloodgood, Bryce Dallas Howard, Common, Jane Alexander and Helena Bonham Carter. You can check out the second trailer here. Director McG led the production, based on a screenplay by John Brancato and Michael Ferris.

Plot Summary: The highly anticipated new installment of "The Terminator" film franchise is set in post-apocalyptic 2018. John Connor is the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future that Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright, a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

Terminator Salvation will hit theaters May 21, 2009.

Do you like the thought of more time traveling? Hate it? Sound off below!

Time travel is always fascinating to me. Everyone relates to getting a mulligan. The main problem with it is it tends to open up the plotholes.

Cluck, Cluck, Cluck....McChicken goes.

This guy is such a tool....he "strongly suspects" the movie is going to take pre Judgement day?  What, aren't you in charge of this trilogy?  If I was a fan of his, which I"m not, I would be pissed you don' t have a plan in place already.  Basically you are making the trilogy for the sake of making a trilogy if you don't have the 2nd and 3rd movies planned out already.

On the slight chance this Salvation will be good, and it won't (watch for that PG-13 rating on the way), it would be a mistake to start doing the "Back to the future" thing that Lost is currently doing.  Look at the mess that thing is creating.

You are right gl17, LOTS and LOTS of plotholes.

Id rather see the producers of TTSCC write up a movie based on the events of the Tv show .. and bring in the future element where john has to work his way up to leader.

I think Salvation will be good but this idea above sounds lame.  Why not make a 3 movie trilogy based all about the future war - i mean they can't wrap it up all in 1 movie no?.  They should elaborate more on the whole future - they can show john sending kyle reese back to 1984  and even show them reprogramming T800's to work for them. They can show the assault on the time travel facility and just work on bringing down skynet all together.

Im sick of the time travel jumping back and forth nonsense.

By galvanize he really means that John Connor will travel back in time to verbally abuse the military!

From what I have seen and read I think "t4" will be the best science fiction movie in a very long time.  i will be at the first show.  if i like it, i will be at the 2nd too.  the original is my favorite by far, but 2 and 3 were both excellent (well maybe 3 was only very good).  McG's idea for the sequel sounds cool.  it is not like the first 3 where a t unit is sent back with an accompanying good guy/robot.  i like the idea of the machines just appearing and a "battle for the present."

On the other hand, it reminds me of Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World.  I thought it would be great if the T-Rex et al were unleashed in a modern city.  this led to a decent action sequence or two, but did not lend itself to a complete story worthy of its name.

I would like to see SkyNet somehow get a voice, or communicate with words on a moniter to talk to John Conner about why it wants to destroy humanity.

Bryzarro 5/5/2009 8:55:18 AM

I'd like to see a movie on what happens when there are no more humans to terminate.  Maybe focus on the Dogs and Cats.  Or time travel and take out the primates so they can't evolve!!  Think about it!!

VTGamehendge 5/5/2009 9:07:28 AM

Wait a minute!  How can there be a pre-apocalyptic 2011?  Didn't T3 end with the bombs falling on Judgment Day?  Does this mean something happens in this movie to delay all that for a few years?  I'm so confused!

VTGamehendge 5/5/2009 9:09:58 AM

Oh and I've always wondered that too, Bryzarro.  What happens when there are no more humans left to kill?  Do the machines live in blissful harmony and get together and make little terminators?

hanso 5/5/2009 9:30:25 AM

I'd like to see a movie where it's just Skynet and John Connor verbally abusing each other.
