When it comes to which color robes he prefers wearing for Gandalf, Sir Ian McKellen is in agreement with his Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson. Gandalf the Grey all the way for both. As you fans know, after Tolkien's character fought the Balrog under Moria and drifted through times & space before being sent back in "White", the character was a bit more serious in nature. As the actor recently says to Rotten Tomatoes, he prefers the funnier and more laid back wizard.
"Grey Gandalf is my favorite," he said. "Peter Jackson's too, we always preferred Gandalf the Grey. Peter liked him because he got down and dirty. He slept in the hedgerows; he was closer to the earth and not quite so spiritual. He's also funnier -- he's got more variety to him. We thought there was more scope in that Gandalf."
Production is reportedly scheduled to start next Spring under the direction of Guillermo Del Toro, who's been scripting out the two Hobbit films alongside Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh.
The Hobbit: Part I will hit theaters December 2011.
The Hobbit: Part II will hit theaters December 2012.

If Smog the dragon looks as cool as the Balrog, this movie is going to be freakin awesome.
Smog must the chain smoking cousin of Smaug.
I'm not sure I like the idea of splitting the movie in half. It sounds like they are going to pad it out with Jacksonism again.
As I said... I'm glad they split the film into two parts. There is definitely enough there to fill to films easily. Plus, if what I read a while back is true, they are going to "pad" (which is a bad word since it implies useless stuff, which these stories definitely wouldn't be) the film with side stories that are happening simultaneously. LIke when Gandalf leaves Bilbo halfway through the book to go deal with the Necromancer (Sauron) with the White Council to cast him out of Mirkwood. And since this is where Legolas is from it is likely that we may see him again. They were also going to include Aragorn's back story a bit. Since he would be around 38 during the Hobbit, it would make sense. And it would be great to see more of him in his Ranger days. I definitely want to see these stories woven into the Hobbit. I think if they didn't do this, simply following Bilbo to the Lonely Mountain would be a bit boring. It would be like haveing LOTR simply follow Frodo to Modor without seeing the other stories as well. I can't wait to hear if these additions will be in the films or not.
No problem with Tolkien additional materials, not happy with the stuff Jackson made up stuff. Just didn't like the changes to the story that Jackson did to add his bits. Denethor running in flames off Minas Tirith, the psi-control had on Theoden etc.
I wonder where they would make the break on the first film.
Before Beorn?
After Mirkwood?
A difficult call perhaps.
Good to see him returning. He was great and will continue the keep this franchise enjoyable.
I love LOTR, but I remember disliking "The Hobbit" when I read it. But that was many years ago, so maybe my opinion will be different now.
I think no matter how good these movies are, they will seem a tad disappointing. The scale of the Hobbit is just so much smaller in comparison to LOTR (the outcome of Bilbo's journey doesn't determine the fate of the world like Frodo's journey did). Since we've already seen the epic part, I don't know if this smaller story will play as well.
But I'm always up for more Ian McKellan :-)
Still not thrilled with Del Torro, but am so excited about this. There is no other movie I want to see more than this.
Randal Graves: "Oh, I'm crazy? Those fuc-kin' hobbit movies were boring as hell. All it was, was a bunch of people walking, three movies of people walking to a fuc-king volcano."
That part in Clerks 2 always cracks me up. I can't wait to see Gandalf back in action again!
