Avi Arad and Steven Paul's Crystal Sky Pictures have set Sean McNamara to direct ROBOSAPIEN.

As announced back in March, Avi Arad Productions will produce the upcoming live action/CGI feature film based on the popular robot toy.

The script by Arad and Max Botkin centers on a scientist working on artificial intelligence who creates robots for humanitarian purposes, only to discover that the corporation he works for intends them for military use. He steals one of his creations, a robot boy named Toby, who, by a series of accidents, gets lost and broken, and then found and fixed by the lonely 11-year-old son of a harassed single mother. The robot and boy become friends, and embark on a series of adventures, pursued by the authorities, climaxing with them having to rescue the scientist and the mother from prison.

The movie is budgeted at $25 million-$30 million. Filming will begin in November in the United States.

This sounds like a rip-off of a really good 80's film that has pretty much been lost over the years, called D.A.R.Y.L--about a robotic little kid with super human abilities. It was sort of like ET meets , War Games, Astro Boy, and Joe 90.

D.A.R.Y.L., was really great stuff...and featured a story centered on the human like robot who the government lost. Absent his memory, D.A.R.Y.L. was taken in by a family, but they quickly discover that he is not a normal little boy, thanks to his unusual gifts. Soon, the government launches an effort to trace him, in a sinister plot to kidnap the boy, and return him to their operation.

By now, D.A.R.Y.L. has developed emotions and has increasingly become a part of his new family...as well, he has learned to become a child in most every way. He is no longer just a machine, he's becoming human.

After being captured by the evil government forces--D.A.R.Y.L. is treated like an emotionless weapon to be used and abused, at will. To them, he is just a lab experiment. With the help of his family, the kid escapes and tears up the government operation.

Stealing a top secret jet, he crashes it, and fakes his own death...so he can return to his adoptive family. It was harder than ET, and really a lot more emotional and featured a great deal more action. Truly a great film!!!

It could also be a updated version of Short Circuit with Johnny 5....

Yes, this does sound like several '80s kid SF movies(you forgot Star Kid) rolled together at your local Coldstone ice cream shop. It just needs candy sprinkles. So far this doesn't look like it would appeal to me, but I suspect the target audience is young.

My first thought was "This is such a rip off of D.A.R.Y.L." as well. I loved that movie and this plot sounds practically identical except that they are swapping out the likable boy for a toy. I'm pretty sure I'll pass on this one.

Hey Avi I have a few retro ideas I can throw at you. I need the money.

Great they make a movie based on this schlock on a toy that eventually will be as forgettablely popular as Teddy Ruxpin is today.

They can find the dollars for this but can't find it to make a live action version of ROM Spaceknight which would be far better than this drivel.

Hell! Deathlok would be far better box office return than a live action spin on a toy using "The Iron Giant" premise storyline.

I remember D.A.R.Y.L.
I liked that movie. Haven't seen or even heard of it since I was a little kid.
