Thespian Ian McShane---who took home a Globe for his foul-mouthed Al Swearengen in "Deadwood"---is ready to lead a new drama pilot for the peacock network called "Kings", reports Variety. Christopher Egan is also set to lead the cast of the new concept. Michael Green ("Heroes") wrote the pilot for "Kings" and is executive producing.

Plot Concept:
A modern-day take on the King David tale from Universal Media Studios with McShane playing the monarch and Egan set as David.

For everyone who whines that networks never try anything new (and I've said my fair share, so I'm lumping myself in that category) here's something fresh and new. I just wonder what a "modern day" take on King David means. Wouldn't the story be better served if it was set in its original time period? I guess it would be compared frequently to Rome at that point, but I don't see that as bad really. I just hope NBC doesn't up the sex to grab more viewers.

ABC tried to do a series set in the Roman period. The show was called "Empire", but it only lasted a few episodes. Maybe they're doing it modern day because they don't want to be comapred to HBO's "Rome". But Ian McShane on a network series?? That'll be the day. Actually, it looks like it already is.

The show was called "Empire", but it only lasted a few episodes, and it stank.
