What They Say
Fall is in the air, along with the smell of octopus balls. And their sweet aroma draws Ikki like a bee to honey. But when he finds the street vendor who's selling them will he find more than the perfect octopus ball recipe? Will it be true love at first sight? Then, an unseasonable cold snap brings a Canadian medafighter riding on the winds of a snowstorm. Afterwards, when rock 'n' roll calls, will Cyandog answer? Or will Spyke be able to recapture the heart of his metabot friend. Finally, when Squidguts sets up shop on a bridge over a busy street, children are forced to robattle the bully, or risk their lives crossing the street. Can Ikki and the gang defeat him? Find out in the next exciting volume of Medabots!

The Review!
Takoyaki! Takoyaki! Takoyaki! Takoyaki! The search for the perfect piece of octopus is upon us with the ninth volume of Medabots

Medabots comes mixed in only an English language stereo mix. All sound is directed towards the front sound stage and no directionality is present. No distortions were present and dialogue is clear.

Another great transfer from ADV. I couldn't detect any mpeg related compression artifacts in the encode, including line shimmering or cross coloration. Like all Medabots episodes, the color appears to be washed out slightly, but this is how the show was presented.

Ikki gets the front cover on A Taste of Medabots of Medabots with Rokusho and Mr. Referee in the blue background. The volume number is present on the front, spine, and back cover. On the back, all four-episode titles are present and a two-sentence description for each episode. Inside, the insert has the stats for Warbandit.

The main menu is static and features Ikki with the introduction music playing. You can either select the start of each individual episode, head into scene selection, or choose extras. Scene selection features five different chapter points with video playing for each one.

The extras on this DVD are the same as the previous DVDs. There are seventeen character descriptions, and ten Medabot descriptions. Pretty bare as usual.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)

Another DVD completely loaded with filler is the final stop before the world championship Medabots tournament occurs in the next DVD.

Can you feel the love tonight as Ikki goes up against an opponent who isn't interested in Metabee, but his stomach in Love at First Bite. Natalie is a wandering takoyaki maker with her Medabot Octoclam, and she's on a journey through Japan to perfect her skills. Takoyaki is a Japanese snack made of a small piece of dough with a piece of octopus in the middle. She thought she had become the best until Ikki visits her cart. Ikki is a connoisseur of takoyaki, and has nothing but bad things to say. Natalie tries various recipes on Ikki, but each one fails. Can she make the perfect piece of takoyaki?

In Once Bitten, Twice Shy a storm visits Japan that shuts down the school. Unfortunately, Ikki, Erika, Metabee, and the Screws get stuck out in the snow and can't reach home. Coach Mountain even goes out to look for them. This blizzard hasn't brought just snow though. A Canadian Medafighter, eh, comes in and wants a match against Metabee.

C-Dawg is in da hiz house in Heavy Medal. Cyandog leaves Spyke after finding out they are ranked dead last in the Japanese Medabot standings. Samantha kicks Spyke out of the Screws until he can back Cyandog back. Down on his luck, Spyke turns to Ikki and Erica to help him find Cyandog back. Except Cyandog has already joined a heavy metal group and doesn't want to go back to Spyke.

Finally, in Bridge Over Troubled Squidguts, Squidguts has taken control of a bridge over a busy street and he challenges every kid with a Medabot who crosses. It's up to the gang to stop him, but it's Karin who steps up to the plate the delivers.

If it wasn't for the takoyaki episode on this DVD, I'd say just skip this DVD. This episode is absolutely hilarious though, and I do find it amazing that they left in all the takoyaki, as it's purely Japanese. If you don't collect Medabots, and just wanted a lone DVD from the series in your collection, this would be the one to have, simply for the takoyaki episode.
