#30 TMNT (2007)

After running the gamut of comics, animation, live-action and animation again, it only seemed fitting that when the Heroes on the Half-Shell returned to the big screen after a 17 year hiatus it would be in the state-of-the-art CGI with 2007's TMNT.

The story skewed towards the darker, edgier comics and began with the turtles in disarray. With the villains defeated and Leonardo off on a mysterious quest in South America, the three remaining turtles are striving for a purpose. Rafael has donned a suit of armor and has assumed the vigilante identity of "Nightwatcher." When Leonardo returns, the Ninja Teens not only have to battle a millionaire bent on becoming an Aztec god, but also the simmering animosity between the two alpha turtles.

First time feature director Kevin Munroe does a spectacular job of rendering a film that feels like a mix of Hong Kong action and ‘50s noir (1949's The Third Man was a key visual reference for the animators). The result is a fast and furious and totally thrilling action movie that proved a modest box office success.
