#10 Kick-Ass (2010)

Without a doubt, Mark Millar is the biggest one-man hype machine since Stan Lee himself. When Kick-Ass was announced as a comic, the man raised expectations for his tale of a superhero in the "real world" sky high. So strong was the buzz, and coming off the box office wave of Wanted, Millar hyped his partially-published story into a go project under producer/director Matthew Vaughn.

Vaughn is no slouch in the hype area either. So driven was he to tell the story of Kick-Ass he bypassed the studio system and raised the money independently. In fact, he almost made his movie in less time than it took Millar and Romita to make their comic.

The film plays as a wild, violent and often hilarious ride. Stealing every scene is Chloe Moretz's darling, foul mouthed and homicidal Hit Girl. And yet, for all its in-your-face, vulgar attitude, Vaughn also found quite a bit of heart in the tale of an earnest teen who just wants to do good in the world.

Hopefully nobody will emulate Kick-Ass, but certainly we can be inspired by him.
