#40 Daredevil (2003)

Widely regarded as an also-ran in the Marvel Comics sweepstakes, Daredevil remains an extremely underrated affair. It opened strong, but quickly faded at the box office, and Fox soon refocused on their more profitable X-Men franchise. Ben Affleck took the lead role as a crusading lawyer blinded by toxic waste which augments his remaining four senses to superhuman levels.

The film suffered from dodgy dialogue and the exasperating overexposure of its leading man, (regarded at the time as too much of a lightweight for the part). It benefited from a properly gritty atmosphere, and some strong supporting performances, including Jon Favreau as Daredevil’s buddy Foggy and a surprisingly perfect (though race blind) turn from Michael Clarke Duncan as the Kingpin.

Most fans consider the subsequent director’s cut a considerable improvement over the truncated theatrical version, and no one can deny the chemistry between Affleck and leading lady Jennifer Garner (playing his doomed love Elektra): the two are currently married.
