#47 Wanted (2008)

“What the fuck did you do today?” James McAvoy’s abrasive assassin snarls at the audience in a late moment from Wanted. The implication is that we, the non-assassins of the world, must all lead lives of quiet desperation, like he did before he learned he could shoot bullets around corners. In answer to his question, comparatively few of us have killed anyone, and Wanted can’t quite understand why that makes us better people.

The overall moral vacuum in which the film dwells complicates the fact that it’s really a blast otherwise. McAvoy and Angelina Jolie strut their stuff in outlandish scene after outlandish scene, as their secret cadre of killers endeavors to keep the world safe from people who may one day cause it great harm. Director Timur Bekmambetov dispenses with all notions of logic or physics, and just throttles us full blast through every scene in the film. It’s a hell of a ride… provided you can silence the better angels of your nature for a couple of hours. The film did gangbusters at the box office, grossing $134 million domestically on its way to a $341 million worldwide payday.
