#20 Road to Perdition (2002)

Some might be surprised by the prospect of Tom Hanks playing a comic book character, much less a grim assassin called the "Angel of Death." That would largely be due to the close association people have between comic books and super heroes.

Sam Mendes' adaptation of Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner's graphic novel Road to Perdition is the kind of film that adults flock too, even as they'd snub a comic telling the same story.

The period crime drama is (as described by Mendes himself) narratively simple and thematically complex, casting Hanks as a family man whose job happens to be killing people for the mob. When Sullivan's employers turn on him, he and his son flee, leaving them to grapple with the violent world his son is now a part of.

Among comic films, Perdition is a critical darling, garnering six Academy Award nominations, and a deserved win Conrad Hall's cinematography.
