Actor Christopher Meloni is trading a badge for a general ranking. Just a few weeks after Meloni said goodbye to "Law & Order: SVU" by exiting his long-running role as Detective Elliot Stabler, Deadline reported that he was the latest to board Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. It started out as an "unspecified" role but once speculation created a firestorm of fan activity, suggesting he could become Lex Luthor, the actor cleared the air by telling NY Mag's Vulture column that he was set to become a general.

"When Vulture caught up with the now ex–Law & Order: SVU star at the Public Theater Gala earlier this week, he told us he'd be instead playing a general in the movie. But when we pressed for more information about the role, he said, "I can't tell you, or I'd have to kill you." We did manage to learn that he starts filming at the end of August and he'll shoot his part over the course of five months in locations including Chicago, Vancouver, and Edwards Air Force Base."

With Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond both still in discussions to become Superman's Kryptonian parents, Jor-El and Lara, Meloni is the latest confirmed casting to board the production behind the previously-set stars Henry Cavill (Superman), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Michael Shannon (General Zod) and Antje Traue (Faora).

With a release set for December 2012, director Zack Snyder is expected to begin production shortly, based on a screenplay by David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan. Batman franchise rebooter Christopher Nolan is overseeing the development as a producer.

Thanks to Pendragon0 for the submission.

He makes a pretty cool cop on TV.  So far Superman has not translated well to live action movie.  I really hope Zack Snyder can break that streak.

I'd say Lois' dad, but he's a little young for that.

Brainiac or Metallo  would be a great part for him. But We shall Kneel before Zod \m/

Wiseguy 6/27/2011 6:25:36 AM

He has that huge head maybe Brainiac would be a good fit. I think Lex Luthor is the role he'll be playing though. Finally a serious Luthor and not a comical or gay one, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Oh, I know what he is going to play.  He is going to reprise his role as Hal Jordan from the first DCU GL animated flick!

I could actually see him as LL, though.  (Of course, I realise there are only about 200 characters in Supes mythology with those initials...)

So no one reads here?  He said, " he told us he'd be instead playing a general in the movie. But when we pressed for more information about the role, he said, "I can't tell you, or I'd have to kill you." We did manage to learn that he starts filming at the end of August and he'll shoot his part over the course of five months in locations including Chicago, Vancouver, and Edwards Air Force Base."

So he's NOT Metallo or Brainiac or Lex. Best bet is General Lane.

How about a Kryptonian general who gets taken out by Zod in an early flashback scene on Krypton.  That would actually be kind of cool.

I'm hoping that we see a version of Krypton that isn't an ice/crystal world like what we saw in the original movie.  That was my first exposure to Krypton as a little kid, and it was YEARS later before I realized that isn't necessarily how it is depicted in the comics.  I think I read somewhere that we might actually get to see that in this movie.

Of course, just because someone says one thing, doesn't mean it is going to happen. Which is why I took Meloni's comment with a grain of salt.  Probably is accurate, but who knows for sure...

Always bet on Zack. :P

Still can't believe he was Freakshow in Harold & Kumar. F*cking priceless.

and yeah, I'm cool with him being in the movie. Still think Micheal Sheen would have made a much more arrogant Zod than the current guy they have, but hey, that's just my 2 cents

I'm a big Zack Snyder Fan.... This'll be good.. just lay of the slo mo a bit and put in some fighting action.. we wanna see Supes kick some ass... not just lift up heavy shit.
